    • Write the date, time in, time out, number of hours and total hours.
  • Put stuff in the locker in the break room
  • New books:
    • stamp pockets with "fine" stamp and the date stamp
      • tape shows the down side of the stamp!!
    • put in a pocket on the first blank page
    • stamp books:
      • copyright page - 3 line stamp
      • pg. 65 - whatever fits
      • over the edge of the book
    • put typing information inside the pocket
    • leave pink slips and red slips poking out
    • put books on typing shelf
  • Typing rules:
    • always turn the typewriter on and off
    • push the handle to open the typewriter
    • put labels in typewriter so that the back side is facing you
    • align the metal piece with the edge of the label paper
    • align the red mark with the middle, or where you want the writing to start
    • Remember: Once you reach the last label on the bottom of the page, the label sheet will not stay in the machine. Put it in backwards so that the bottom label is now on the top.
    • Adult fiction: Author's last name
      • Mysteries get mystery stickers, and so on.
    • Children's books: EJ (enter) Author's last name
      • Some popular books (such as Dora and Star Wars) are not listed by the author's last name so that they won't be separated and will be easier to fine. (ex. EJ (enter) Dora). Watch out for that
      • EJ's get the letter of the author's last name on the spine above the white label
      • They then get a different piece of colored tape on top of that. The color of the tape is determined by the --second letter-- of the author's last name.
        • Remember that the blade on the tape cutter is sharp!
    • Easy Readers:
      • ER (enter) Author's last name
      • Easy readers get the letter of the author's last name on the spine above the white label
  • Put a post-it with your initials and the date on top of the stacks of books that you finish
  • Put books on counter
  • Discharging books:
    • go into tub of returned books and take 5 or 6 to the counter
      • remember to push cart all the way against the wall when done. otherwise books will fall onto the floor when somebody drops them through the slot.
      • remember to leave the audio and audio visual items for the adults
    • go onto the computer and click discharge
    • open up the books and throw out any old due date slips
    • scan the barcode
      • REMEMBER TO WATCH THE SCREEN!!!!
        • if a window pops up, it's probably because
          • there's a late fine
          • the book belongs to another library
          • the book is on hold
        • for fines, just hit "discharge"
        • for a transfer book, hit "OK" to print out a transfer slip. stick that into the book so that you can see where it's going to
        • Carry book over to transfer pile
        • if the book is on hold, print the slip
          • look at the person's last name. is there a + sign next to it? if there is, that person wants an email notification that the book is available. if not, the person wants a phone call
          • Write the person's last name, first name (if it is a very common last name), the date, and the plus sign if they have one
          • place slip peeking out of book so that you can see the handwritten side
          • carry over to shelf and put it it alphabetical order by PERSON'S last name (not author)
    • For regular books that belong to the library, put into 2 piles: books that have a slash through the "O," and books that do not. this means that there is a security sensor.
      • REMEMBER: most books have the sensor, it's just the older books that don't
    • Carry books with the sensor the the cart with the sensor books. Put them in height order. Once the shelf is full, run the electric sensor thing on the spines of the books/covers of CDs
      • don't press button until you have lifted the sensor thing from the shelf. otherwise it'll hit the metal and make an awful noise.
    • once sensor is removed, take the new books
      • Adult fiction goes in alphabetical order on the top shelf
      • Adult non fiction goes on the middle shelf in no particular order
      • Childern's books go on the bottom shelf in no particular order
        • REMEMBER: Fiction will be just the author's last name. Non fiction will be a number. Kids will have a J for juvenile.
      • now take the older books
        • Adult fiction goes on the top shelf in no order
        • Adult non fiction and young adult books go on the middle shelf
        • Kids books go on the bottom shelf
