• Love is like a narcotic. At first it brings the euphoria of complete surrender. The next day, you want more. You’re not addicted yet, but you like the sensation, and you think you can still control things. You think about the person you love for two minutes, and forget them for three hours. But then you get used to that person, and you begin to be completely dependent on them. Now you think about him for three hours and forget him for two minutes. If he’s not there, you feel like an addict who can’t get a fix. And just as addicts steal and humiliate themselves to get what they need, you’re willing to do anything for love.
  • "Recognize how you hurt people, not just how people hurt you."
  • “One night she came back from her daily walk stunned by the revelation that one could be happy not only without love, but despite it.”
  • “Some people bring out the worst in you, others bring out the best, and then there are those remarkably rare, addictive ones who just bring out the most. Of everything. They make you feel so alive that you’d follow them straight into hell, just to keep getting your fix.”
  • “We are ancient, you and I. We are clumsy newborns with curious hands. We are the stars that caught fire in the cosmos Generations before the Earth pressed it’s molten clay together. Once—we were the youngest creatures to ever exist. Now, we are poets and landmines. We are volatile and reckless and in love.”
  • “Love. The reason I dislike that word is that it means too much for me, far more than you can understand.”
  • “I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.”
  • "I looked and looked at her, and I knew, as clearly as I know that I will die, that I loved her more than anything I had ever seen or imagined on earth."
  • “Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind. "Pooh?" he whispered. / "Yes, Piglet?" / "Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's hand. "I just wanted to be sure of you.”
  • "I exist in two places; here and where you are."
  • “I love no one but you, I have discovered, but you are far away and I am here alone. Then this is my life and maybe, however unlikely, I’ll find my way back there. Or maybe, one day, I’ll settle for second best. And on that same day, hell will freeze over, the sun will burn out and the stars will fall from the sky.”
  • "You're not friends. You'll never be friends. You'll be in love 'til it kills you both. You'll fight, and you'll shag, and you'll hate each other 'til it makes you quiver, but you'll never be friends. Real love isn't brains, children. It's blood. It's blood screaming inside you to work its will. I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it"
  • "You are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing."
  • "She was dressed in a white little gown that came just below her knees, and a wreath of mignonettes clasped with blue slices of sapphire bound up her hair. Her pink bare feet scattered the dew before them as she came. She was younger than John -- not more than sixteen." // "Hello," she cried softly. "I'm Kismine." She was much more than that to John already."
  • “Think how you love me,” she whispered. “I don’t ask you to love me always like this, but I ask you to remember.” // “You’ll always be like this to me.” // “Oh no; but promise me you’ll remember." Her tears were falling. “I’ll be different, but somewhere lost inside me there’ll always be the person I am tonight.”
  • "Tonight I can write the saddest lines. I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too."
  • “I love you as certain dark things are to be loved, in secret, between the shadow and the soul.”
  • “Perhaps it's better if I live in your heart, where the world can't see me. If I'm dead, there will be no stain on our love.”
  • “Whisper a dangerous secret to someone you care about. Now they have the power to destroy you, but they won’t. This is what love is.”
  • "I’d like to feel that you know I’m thinking of you and loving you always."
  • "I fell in love with her courage, her sincerity, and her flaming self respect. And it’s these things I’d believe in, even if the whole world indulged in wild suspicions that she wasn’t all she should be. I love her and that’s the beginning and the end of everything."
  • "Do you know when they say soul-mates? Everybody uses it in personal ads. 'Soul-mate wanted.' It doesn’t mean too much now. But soul-mates--think about it. When your soul--whatever that is anyway--something so alive when you make music or love and so mysteriously hidden most of the rest of the time, so colorful and big but without color or shape … when your soul finds another soul it can recognize even before the rest of you knows about it. The rest of you just feels sweaty and jumpy at first. And your souls get married without even meaning to. Even if you can’t be together for some reason in real life, your souls just go ahead and make the wedding plans. A soul’s wedding must be too beautiful to even look at. It must be blinding. It must be like all the wedding’s in the world - gondolas with canopies of doves, champagne glasses shattering, wings of veils, drums beating, flutes and trumpets, showers of roses. And after that happens you know--that’s it, this is it. But sometimes you have to let that person go. When you’re little, people, movies and fairytales all tell you that you’re going to meet this person. So you keep waiting and it’s a lot harder than they make it sound. Then you meet and you think, okay, now we can just get on with it but you find that sometimes your soul brother partner lover has other ideas about that. They want to go to New York and write their own songs or whatever. They feel like you don’t really love them but the idea of them, the dream you’ve had since you were a kid about a panther boy to carry you out of the forest of your fear or an angel to make love and celestial music with in the clouds or a genie twin to sleep with you inside a lamp. Which doesn’t mean they’re not the one. It just means you’ve got to do whatever you have to do for you alone. You’ve got to believe in your magic and face up to the mean nasty part of yourself that wants to keep the person you love locked up in a place in you where no one else can touch them or even see them. Just the way when somebody you love dies you don’t stop loving them but you don’t lock up their souls inside you. You turn that love into something else, give it to somebody else. And sometimes in a weird way when you do that you get closer than ever to the person who died or the one your soul married."
  • "I do not care what car you drive. Where you live. If you know someone who knows someone who knows someone. If your clothes are this years cutting edge. If your trust fund is unlimited. If you are A-list B-list or never heard of you list. I only care about the words that flutter from your mind. They are the only thing you truly own. The only thing I will remember you by. I will not fall in love with your bones and skin. I will not fall in love with the places you have been. I will not fall in love with anything but the words that flutter from your extraordinary mind."
  • "Every heart sings a song, incomplete, until another heart whispers back. Those who wish to sing always find a song. At the touch of a lover, everyone becomes a poet."
  • "If hers was the precise angle of cut crystal flashing in the light, his was the warm glow of a candle through bone china. If hers was long-stemmed red roses, his was garden roses, on a trellis, still growing."
  • "She laid her other hand on his, and they looked at each other with a kind of solemnity, as though they stood in the presence of death. Something in truth lay dead between them--the love she had killed in him and could no longer call to life. But something lived between them also, and leaped up in her like an imperishable flame: it was the love his love had kindled, the passion of her soul for his."
  • "In my madness I was actually in love with her for the few hours it all lasted; it was the same unmistakable ache and stab across the mind, the same sighs, the same pain, and above all the same reluctance and fear to approach."
  • "Perhaps all the questions we ask of love, to measure, test, probe, and save it, have the additional effect of cutting it short. Perhaps the reason we are unable to love is that we yearn to be loved, that is, we demand something (love) from our partner instead of delivering ourselves up to him demand-free and asking for nothing but his company."
  • "At this moment there are six billion, five hundred and two million, eight hundred and sixty seven thousand, one hundred and twenty people in the world, give or take a few and sometimes all you need is one. For better or for worse."
  • I no longer believed in the idea of soul mates, or love at first sight. But I was beginning to believe that a very few times in your life, if you were lucky, you might meet someone who was exactly right for you. Not because he was perfect, or because you were, but because your combined flaws were arranged in a way that allowed two separate beings to hinge together.
  • To experience such love is to feel oneself doubled. Such feeling liberates and deepens the personality, inspires us to noble deeds and works of genius. When this great love happens---and it is but once in a lifetime---it has a higher right than all other feelings. The perfect love establishes its own right in a life.
  • "When the heart speaks, the mind finds it indecent to object."
  • Finding you was like finding a safe place to live again. Before I met you, I feel I could soar at the drawing table, but I always came back to my most static prison in marriage. It set me free to find you, to think there was a possibility of something more expansive. You make me want to be a better man. A better artist.
  • She loved him with every cell in her body. She found delight in every part of him. His irrepressible laugh, the merry eyes that merely always looked as if he'd just heard the most amusing punch line, his presence in every waking moment. She loved the way he impulsively brushed the back of his hand across her cheek at unexpected moments.
  • At night I dream that you and I are two plants that grew together, roots entwined, and that you know the earth and the rain like my mouth, since we are made of both earth and rain.
  • "How did we fall out of love?" you asked. "We never fell deep enough in," I answered. We gave enough of ourselves for love to show its face, but not enough for it to become a home for the both of us.
  • "The right one does not stand in your way. They make space for you to move forward."
  • "Love yourself. I've never realise how hard it is until I tried doing it. It's so easy to imagine the possibility of a situation, until you actually try to attempt it. I'm so used to putting my love into someone else that I don't know how to do it for myself. I've spent my whole life moving on from one person to another, with the in between leaving me feeling lost and empty. It's really stupid thinking about it, because the process of me putting my love in someone else always leaves me feeling used and miserable. I build up a whole scenario in my head and it never happens the way I anticipate it. Unrequited love is the worst, and unrequited love is what always happens. The idea of things having a chance to work out always makes me excited but it is also what kills me at the same time. You start to build up expectations, and start to overthinking when things don't go accordingly to plan/ You start predicting the fall, start finding flaws in yourself, and then destroy the relationship before the relationship destroys you. It's a whole internal torture, and the person you're doing it to you is yourself. I wish I could put the love I give to other people to myself. I really wish I could. But it's just so much easier to give it out when you are never used to receiving in the first place."
  • "But what if I never get over you? What if I continue to wake up every day of my fucking life and want you so badly that my bones shake so much that they feel like they're going to break? What if I keep waiting for a call or a text or a sign from God that never comes? What if you were the one, but I wasn't?"
  • "Thank you for seeing museums in my where I saw empty hallways."
  • "I hope that you find someone who brings out the best in you and makes you appreciate and love yourself even more - and I hope that when you finally find that person, they will stay."
  • "My heart is not captured easily. I am disinterested in small tal, disillusioned with love, and too focused on my dreams and aspirations to lead anybody my attention for long. But if we make that attention, if you find your way into my heart, I will fall for you like gravity has let go of the earth."
  • "I won't beg someone to love me. I learned long ago that there is no use in hopeless pleas of trying to make someone stay. I am too good to chase someone who does not know my worth and I am too wild to keep waiting for someone who doesn't acknowledge my value. I want to be loved unconditionally. I shouldn't have to fight so hard for it. I do not have the time to prove to someone that I am worth it. I shouldn't have to prove any of that; I am worth more than that."
  • "There's so much more to life than finding someone who will want you, or being sad over someone who doesn't. There's a lot of wonderful time to be spent discovering yourself without hoping someone will fall in love with you along the way, and it doesn't need to be painful or empty. You need to fill yourself up with love. Not anyone else. Become a whole being on your own. Go on adventures, fall asleep in the woods with friends, wander around, the city at night, sit in a coffee shop on your own, write on bathroom stalls, leave notes in library books, dress up for yourself, give to others, smile a lot. Do all things with love, but don't romanticise life like you can't live without it. Live for yourself and be happy on your own. It isn't any less beautiful, I promise."

  • "Anyone can love a rose, but it takes a great deal to love a leaf. It’s ordinary to love the beautiful, but it’s beautiful to love the ordinary."
  • "I don’t suppose I really know you very well - but I know you smell like the delicious damp grass that grows near old walls and that your hands are beautiful opening out of your sleeves and that the back of your head is a mossy sheltered cave when there is trouble in the wind and that my cheek just fits the depression in your shoulder."

  • "If you remember me, I don't care if everyone else forgets."
  • "Never ever forget that you are a constellation / And I have owned a telescope since the day I was born."

  • “I don’t know if you or I exist, but somewhere there are poems about us.”
  • “When I die, lava will flow and preserve me whole / for 50,000 years. I’ll be exhibited in a great museum, / next to the whale bones and amethyst geodes. / You’ll be pinned with the butterflies, handled with gloves, exquisitely fragile. // Isn’t it funny they’ll never connect us? / This rock woman with that paper man? / They were never in love. / She would have pounded him into dust. / He’d have been crushed by a woman like that.”
  • “I desire only to live in this world for your sake, and I would rather live banished in any part of the earth with you than live a sorrowful widow’s life without you.”

She is naive she does not have all of this baggage, she is sort of … there is something pristine about her and unspoiled, and also, lonely, I think he identifies he is a loner, he becomes a loner, he has shot himself from the world, and she is a similar sort to him, and she is very… there is an honesty about her that I think he admires, and he responds to and finds attractive."
  • If someday the moon calls you by your name don’t be surprised,Because evey night I tell her about you.
  • "I love you more than my own skin and even though you don’t love me the same way, you love me anyways, don’t you? And if you don’t, I’ll always have the hope that you do, and I’m satisfied with that. Love me a little. I adore you."
  • "but here is the secret / that no one dares breathe / for fear of opening their mouths / only to have their lungs fumigated / with the coiling tongues of ghosts— // I adore you / and I only need / your gossamer skin / upon my aching chest / to feel like I’m worth / the atoms of me."
  • "A serious girl, when she finds someone who calms her spirit and quiets her busy thoughts, will love you so fiercely, it will defy even her own logic and reasoning."
