Ester's father left shortly after her mother found out that she was pregnant for the second time, this time with another man's child. About a month after she gave birth to her brother, Giovanni, her mother passed, leaving the both of them in their grandmother's care, until she also passed away due to old age. They became street children after that, living off what they could steal/beg for. She felt like she was Giovanni's protector, especially when she came into her mutation. However, he died at a young age, during the bombings in Malta during WWII.

During the 70's was when she immigrated to America, due to the fact that the Maltese government was promoting immigration by paying for passage costs when overpopulation became a problem. Ever since then she traveled around - through New Orleans, up and down the West Coast. Eventually, she settled in New York and opened up a natural healing shop, living in the loft/apartment above it.
