So friends, this is an exercise in ego, but I can live with that. It's also the easiest way to encourage stalkers without seeming entirely nuts. I'll live with that too.

About: I'm a student at UBC in lovely, rainy Vancouver. I live in an old house in the city with some rad roommates and a lot of house plants. I'm a writer, reader, activist, cyclist, and a history and anthropology major.

Italian

  • Savio Volpe— Osteria-rustic style Italian restaraunt in Mount Pleasant. Serves simple cocktails and fresh pasta and has a large Italian wine menu. 615 Kingsway.
  • Ask for Luigi— Handmade pasta and casual Italian dining just east of Gastown. 305 Alexander St.
  • Campagnolo— on Main Street serves a variety of authentic and innovative Italian food. Lunch on weekdays, dinner seven days a week.
  • Sorella— in the Cambie Village offers casual and classic Italian dining seven days a week and lunch on weekdays. The owners also run another restaurant that might be worth checking out.
  • Francesco's— Fine Italian restaurant in the downtown core. 860 Burrard St.

French

  • Café Salade de Fruits—
  • La Brasserie— Cozy Franco-German restaurant with an open kitchen in the West End. Serves decent spätzle. Closed on Mondays and open for brunch on weekends. 1091 Davie Street.

German

  • Bauhaus— Fine German dining in Gastown. Open for lunch on weekdays and dinner 7 days a week. 1 W Cordova St.
  • Bestie— Sausages and pretzels in Chinatown, with a weekday happy hour 5 dollar deal on a pretzel and beer. 105 E Pender.

Sushi

  • The Eatery— alternative/ american-style sushi source in Kitsilano.
  • Tomokazu— sister restaurant to Ninkazu in Richmond, serves all you can eat with a discount late-night menu after 9:00pm.

Ramen

  • Marutama Ramen— No vegetarian options.780 Bidwell Street, downtown library, and Metrotown, with a spin-off location, Marutama Gaiden at 2858 Main Street.
  • Hokkaido Ramen Santouka— 1690 Robson Street and 558 W Broadway.
  • Motomachi Shokudo Ramen— Closed on Wednesdays. 740 Denman St.
  • Ramen Danbo— 1833 W 4th Ave and 1333 Robison Street.
  • Hida Takayama Ramen— in the Robson Square Mall food court, the only place in Vancouver with real ramen flour noodles.

Greek and Mediterranean

  • The Greek by Anatoli— serves greek food in Yaletown that emphasizes small shared plates, or mezze.

Mexican and Latino

  • Las Margaritas— Mexican restaurant everyone keeps recommending at West 4th and Maple
  • Los Cuervos— Taqueria in Mount Pleasant, just west of Fraser. 603 Kingsway.
  • Salsa and Agave— Authentic Mexican food in Yaletown

Vegetarian

  • The Acorn— vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free goodness. Their drinks menu looks pretty killer too.
  • Heirloom Vegetarian— located at 12th and Granville, serves a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Looks fantastic, and is, as a nice bonus, invested in using fair-trade, local, organic, ethically sourced ingredients.

Farm-to-table

  • Royal Dinette— Vintage diner decor with a rotating menu in Coal Harbour. Open for happy hour on weekdays and dinner every day except Sunday.

  • Forage— Serves breakfast, brunch and dinner in the West End. 1300 Robson Street.
  • Farmer's Apprentice— Organic, seasonal offerings at a cozy restaurant in Kitsilano. Open for lunch on weekdays, brunch on weekends and dinner nightly. 1535 W 6th Ave.

American

  • L'Abattoir— French-influenced American cuisine with emphasis on seafood and west-coast ingredients. Large, full-service bar, with daily happy hour, and brunch served on the weekends. 217 Carrall Street.
  • ESP Restaurant— video-game themed joint near Waterfront station. Haven't tried, but sounds cool.

Tapas

  • Bodega on Main— Spanish Tapas served just south of Chinatown, with happy hour every day, and brunch on weekends. 1014 Main Street.

Indian

  • Vij's—Open for dinner 7 days a week from 5:30 on serving innovative Indian food in a beautiful setting. 3106 Cambie Street.
  • Vij's Rangoli— Lunch and Dinner served in a casual environment, along with a late-night (post-midnight) snack menu. Located in the South Granville neighbourhood with an open kitchen and a large patio, Vij's Rangoli serves similar cuisine to it's sister restaurant. 1480 West 11th.

Diners

  • Slickity Jim's Chat & Choux
  • Meat & Bread— with two locations downtown, Meat & Bread is a great place to get a sandwich and enjoy a beer. Their menu changes and there's always something good to eat (plus their grilled cheese, always a classic, is to die for).
  • Lucy's— quirky round the clock diner on Main. Great pancakes, also serves vegetarian poutine (scrumptious).
  • Wallflower Diner— haven't tried but they have vegan poutine. Some people rave, but my friends who are cooks call it mediocre.

Pubs

  • St. Augustine's— has a great beer list and a nice ambiance. Also they serve delicious mac and cheese croquettes. Always try to reserve a table though, it makes life a lot easier.
  • Pourhouse— Locale serving vintage inspired cocktails in a beautiful heritage building in Gastown. 162 Water St.
  • The Kings Head— British style pub in Kitsilano, serves traditional pub fare at a reasonable price, plays live music Wednesday through Sunday after 9 pm, and features antique decor to match the restored 1897 interior.
  • The New Oxford— Yaletown pub that serves craft beer in a cozy English-inspired interior. Has a very attractive setting, and serves innovative pub fare, including currywurst(!).
  • Dover Arms Pub— a more conventional English style pub in the West End. Live music on Sundays, games other days of the week.
  • The London Pub— great pub in the Chinatown/ Railtown area.
  • Six Acres— a Gastown pub in Vancouver's oldest brick building, cozy, cute, and serves a broad selection of beer and great share plates.
  • The Stormcrow— a geek-serving pub on Commercial Drive that dishes up hearty fare alongside some excellently curated cocktails, and painfully cleverly-named shots. Tons of fun, you can play their board games or bring your own.

Misc

  • Per Se Social Corner— It's hard to put a finger on just what Per Se Social Corner does best or most. Serves tapas, pizza, coffee and drinks from early in the morning to well after midnight. 891 Homer Street.
  • Calabash Caribbean Bistro— Caribbean food and live music, open every day except Monday in Gastown. 428 Carrell St.

Cafes

  • Elysian— nice independent shop near Heather and Broadway, best fresh shortbread in the city.
  • Daniel's— cute chocolate shop near Granville and Broadway that also sells pastries, coffee, and delicious hot chocolate.
