What is a zine?

It is short for magazine! In this case, it is a fanzine, which is a culmination/collection of works usually organized and created by fans (artists, writers, etc.).

What is Shukita?

The pairing between the P5 protagonist ("Shu"jinko in Japanese) and "Kita"gawa Yusuke!

Flower theme?

Yes, our final theme is the language of flowers! Don't worry though, you don't necessarily have to draw or write about flowers. Each piece will have a specific flower meaning that acts as a prompt/inspiration, rather than literally having to feature the flower in question. However, if you do like drawing flowers and want to take the theme more literally, that's 100% fine too!

Where does the title come from?

The song "Found a Light" played at the end of episode 8 in the P5 the Animation! We felt it suited the pairing.

Is this a for-profit or charity zine?

For profit. This is a fanmade project consisting of creators who love the pairing, and we would like to reward everyone for their work accordingly!

How many artists/writers will be accepted?

We have a ballpark of numbers right now: about 20-30 artists, 5-6 writers, and 2-4 extra merch artists. However, it does depend on how many apps we receive! If we get a lot, we'll be able to possibly expand our numbers.

What will contributors receive as compensation?

  • Free copy of PDF for everyone
  • Free physical zine for writers and illustrators
  • Free merch bundle for merch artists
  • If preorders go exceedingly well, we will provide a full bundle for everyone!
  • Even split of the zine profits (after subtracting costs)

Can I submit traditional art?

Yes, as long as it's at least 300 dpi for printing purposes and cleanly scanned!

What's expected of contributors?

  • Writers: A 2000 to 3500 word piece surrounding Shukita (word limit is more or less flexible, you can go slightly over or under)
  • Artists: One 6x9" piece surrounding Shukita (can talk to us about a spread if interested)
  • Merch artists: At least one piece of Shukita merch for the merch bundle (we will ask what kind of merch you'd like to make!)

Why do we have to reserve flowers?

This is to avoid too much overlap. While themes/meanings can be drawn/written very differently (hence why participants are allowed to choose similar meanings but different flowers), we would like to have enough variety so that there aren't three pieces featuring literal sunflowers, for example. This is not to limit anyone, but to encourage variety in the zine. We also want to avoid any possible comparisons between pieces that are too similar! Participants will likely interpret similar themes differently (which is why we allow that), but three pieces of the exact same flower physically depicted will be too visually similar--especially since we will not have a huge contributor list. We ultimately hope that contributors will each have a unique flower that they like ^o^

Why first come first serve, and not assignments based on top three/top five choices lists?

The reason for first come first serve is to avoid biased decisions when it comes to assigning flowers based on top three/top five choice lists. If artist A wants sunflower (going off the above example) as their first choice, but also artist B and C--then it might raise questions of why the sunflower was given to A and not B/C, which could potentially hurt feelings. There will also be a three day buffer between inviting contributors the server and flower claiming, which should give everyone enough time to settle down and prepare both their first choices and think about back ups!
