- initially felt like my fieldwork was a failure
- took interview in wrong direction; i never considered taking the interview off the 'historic' path in order to get more in-depth
- local history was not her area of expertise
- not necessarily a bad thing; in retrospect, i see her interview shows her heavy focus on family rather than the local history i was trying to extract from her
- less history, more about her personal lifestyle - but even this information fell short
- still a major contribution to TV project - many people will respond to the historic aspect of the project, but PB gives a glance into a kind of family life that is becoming harder and harder to find. "i don't know if it's country..."
- adoration for the area - virginia beach specifically, bc that's where her family was (p33 on hampton)
- p3 - when asked about how area has changed, she includes opinions of her family members (when bobby's sister comes...)
- repetitive on non-family topics
- considered that maybe she couldn't speak without filtering through her husband; not true- its just that she experienced a lot of the local culture with her husband, and he really had more firsthand experience with it
- p 10, it's always "we"
- she was nervous. notes, repetition..
- p 11 "it sucks"
- also relaxed/spoke most freely when speaking about her neighbors (+ family) - flag as her area of expertise
- i asked family questions in desperation. also used her notes in desperation.
- past & future - the way things were vs. how she hopes things will be for her grandchildren
- methods of control - used by me, used by pb, and ones that i could have used
- experience is the best teacher, so i dove in head first..
