- filipinos prize lighter skin; light skin is considered more attractive than dark skin. this is like the african american perception of light vs. dark skin, and what it indicates in terms of social class.
- mestizas are considered more attractive than full filipinas. in general, our parents would have no problem with us marrying white people. marrying a black person, however, is usually considered unacceptable.
- a lot of filipino americans are military. and republican. how does this influence their social & linguistic ideologies?
- if group A idolizes group B, and B looks down on group C, A will look down on C as well in an effort to be more like B; perhaps A should question B's ideology more before buying into it.
- african americans are so culturally different from asian americans - i think it's especially hard for people who grew up in high-context cultures to blend comfortably with others who are low-context and very direct. i'm sure the directness is taken as offensive in many instances where it is not intended to be.
- 'ontology'
- "if language is constantly shifting, then so too are the ways we define ourselves." -borchers, page 293
- differences between minority groups when defining themselves in the american social landscape
- perhaps certain groups continue trying to "fit in" with the majority, while others have accepted the label of inferiority - this may somewhat account for the relationships between asians & white americans, as opposed to black & white americans.
