For the purposes of this, I am defining 'kid' as before I went to High School in 1994

  • There was no Internet. Well, not really.
  • Only freaks had mobile phones.
  • No USB. Nuff said.
  • There were no female ministers of religion
  • There was a time when 'The Simpsons' didn't exist.
  • Kurt Cobain, Bill Hicks, my mum, Jeff Buckley, Mitch Hedberg, Diana Spencer and Michael Hutchence were all alive and doing stuff.
  • 'Terrorists' meant the IRA
  • Music came on cassettes that your young nephew could easily destroy.
  • Portable Music Players played radio or said cassettes, and ran off AA batteries. The music would get slower and deeper as the batteries ran low. Plus, these players were fairly hefty and generally would not fit in a pocket.
  • John Howard was not the Prime Minister
  • The President of the USA was a Democrat
  • JPII was the pope
  • Pluto was a planet
  • Computers were monochromatic, or EGA if you were wealthy. Few homes had one.
  • Hip Hop was a fringe genre
  • There were Three Tenors
  • There were Great War veterans
  • There was no Viagra
  • The USSR existed
  • Aaron Spelling ruled the TV Universe
  • There was no GST
  • There was no 'One Nation' or 'Family First'
  • There was no Bubble Cup or Bread Top
  • No one drank green tea - let alone white.
  • People wore Doc Martens
  • HBO wasn't that good
  • Wil Wheaton was an actor (sort of).
  • There was no such thing as generation Y
  • Buffy was just one pretty bad movie
