I don't think everyone here saw the compilation I made of Harold hate/criticism from an old AGU forum but basically there were a lot of people who described Harold as a deeply depressing character and implied if not outright stated that they thought Angelica was abusive towards him, and I've been thinking about this a lot because it's interesting to me. Now, I'm not gonna get into whether or not Harold is a depressing character right now, but calling Angelica abusive is just.... wrong to me. Yes, she is selfish and often cold, but she isn't outright cruel. As a child she definitely was, but she's matured from her behavior since then. Hell, I've seen a lot of people complain that they don't like how much nicer Angelica is in AGU. Angelica and Harold's relationship is definitely an interesting one but it's not abuse. Angelica does care about Harold and regards him as one of her best friends, she wouldn't do anything to deliberately hurt him. She does often act while only thinking about herself but that's just her character, she's impulsive and self-seeking but she has limits. Yes, Angelica takes advantage of Harold constantly, but as shown in Ladies' Man he is capable of standing up to her at any point he decides. He is not being forced against his will to do things for her, it's his choice. In fact, he likes going out of his way to do things for her and being bossed around by her, this has not only been outright said by him in AGU but evident ever since his very first appearance in Rugrats. Angelica and Harold both gain something out of their relationship; Angelica has someone who will treat her like royalty and Harold gets to devote time to the person he cares about most. If their relationship were abusive, Harold would just be getting used without anything in it for him. Now, while Harold rarely had appearances as a child in the franchise, it wouldn't be unreasonable to imagine his and Angelica's relationship being scarier when they were little. We've all seen how Angelica treated the babies back in the day. The babies would wise up and stand up to her in the end, but there being someone who would just go along with whatever cruel child Angelica wanted without question would be disastrous. Except... even as a child Harold has been shown to be capable of standing up to her. To sum up, do people really think KC would write an abusive relationship between their characters. Angelica and Harold's relationship is Not That Deep and the fact that multiple people have described them that way is so wild to me. I think it largely comes down to people having an extremely negative image of Harold's character and not taking the time to understand him, and it also says something about how they view Angelica.
