exo is a nine member south korean-chinese boy group under sm entertainment. first teased in 2011, and along with three former members, the group debuted in two equally numbered, different-language subgroups, exo-k and exo-m, on april 8th in 2012. these subgroups were formed so exo could promote simultaneously in both south korea and china, however, after a series of member departures between the years 2014 and 2015, it became increasingly unclear how exo-k and exo-m would be able to go on separately, if at all. as such, the group now promotes together as one, although their albums are still released in both korean and mandarin chinese. exo also debuted in japan on november 4th in 2015.

more · zhang yixing is exo's sole chinese member. he made his solo debut with a self-composed, chinese mini album entitled 'lose control', on october 28th in 2016. exo-cbx is exo's first official subunit. made up of members kim minseok, byun baekhyun, and kim jongdae, they debuted with a korean mini album entitled 'hey mama!', on october 31st in 2016.
