What is Connect?
A Haikyuu fanzine focusing purely on fiction; writing and poetry. Remember those old fanfic anthologies we all tucked away on our bookshelves back before ff.net existed? That’s about right.
Why is there no art?
There’s been a lot of good, healthy discussion in fandom recently about writer contribution vs reception and praise and it’s something the organisers of Connect are very passionate about. We want to see a zine that promotes writers and rewards them fully for their hard work and so the decision was made, not to include art in Connect.
Who’s running it?
Two friends who are long term fans, writers and readers of fanfiction, with experience in beta’ing and graphic design.
What’s the theme?
The theme is ‘connect’ or ‘connection’ - something broad and volleyball related to keep the content varied!
What can I submit?
**SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED**
We are accepting brand new works only. The word limit will be 1k minimum - 5k maximum for fanfiction, and 1k maximum for poetry. We are not enforcing a content restriction, so from gen to shipping and up to NC-17, write whatever you want to write. Each piece in the zine will have applicable warnings attached.
How do I submit?
**SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED**
https://pastebin.com/ZwKspQCG Please fill out this form and submit it directly to the Zine email: HQconnect@gmail.com
What’s the submission period?
**SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED**
Submissions open on September 1st 2017 and the final deadline for all submissions is February 28th 2018 at midnight UTC. Anything we receive after this time and date will be put into a queue until the main submissions are processed, but we won’t be guaranteeing inclusion as priority will go to those submissions submitted on time.
Will my work be beta’d?
We will be spellchecking/formatting all of the final roster, but we do ask that you run your works through your own betas beforehand. We will not change anything beyond what’s been specified.
How many writers will be chosen?
**13 Writers have been chosen!**
Who is doing the choosing?
All three organisers will be reviewing submissions and picking what we feel are the best for inclusion. There’s a broad spectrum of Haikyuu love between us, so we’ll be doing our best to be fair and inclusive in our final decision.
What happens if I do get chosen?
If you are chosen, we will be in contact via email with further instructions/any questions needed to include your work in the zine.
What happens if I don’t get chosen?
If you are not chosen, we will be in contact via email with our apologies and you are free to do with your fic as you please. We will also create an AO3 tag for the zine which you are welcome to add your fic to.
Is there an amnesty period on what I create if my work is chosen to feature in the zine?
Yes. If you are chosen to be included in the zine, we ask that you do not post your work online until up to 6 months after the zine is shipped. We want to push pre-orders and make sure that every author gets paid something for their hard work, but that means keeping these works exclusive for a time. Don’t worry though, you’ll get an email from us once the amnesty is over!
What’s the preorder period?
Preorders will run from March 14th 2018 to April 15th 2018.
How big will it be?
Our current plans are a 150 - 200 page A5 zine. Obviously this is subject to change, depending on the final word count, but it’s a good place to start.
How much will it cost?
The zine will cost £15 GBP.
When will the zine ship?
The beginning of May 2018.
Where will you ship to?
We ship worldwide.
If I'm chosen for the zine, will I get a copy?
Yes, of course!
Will I get paid?
Yes! The current plan is to split the full profits of the zine equally between every featured author. The final amount and therefore the amount you are paid will be determined by the amount of pre-orders we receive, but no matter what you will be paid something for your hard work. There is an option in the submission form to opt out of being paid, in which case your share of the profits will be shared amongst the other authors.
Do the organisers get paid?
No. We want to support the chosen writers as much as possible, so the organisers plan to sink the final cost of production themselves, because the bottom line of this zine is in giving back to the writers in our fandom and community. If, however, you’d like to support our work in curating and production, you can donate to the Connect Ko-fi fund! (https://ko-fi.com/hqconnect)
Will there be a PDF version?
For the moment, no, there are no plans to release the zine as a PDF.
Is this a one off zine?
That depends on the outcome! All things being successful, we’d love to turn Connect into an annual or even bi-annual anthology that sees our fandom fiction creators rewarded for their efforts.
