the social studies teacher is put to work again! i made him help me develop this list of historical events in the usa i should be familiar with.

    • jamestown founded (first permanent settlement in the americas)
  • 1763
    • british win french and indian war (america and canada become british colonies)
  • 1776
    • declaration of independence (declared independence from great britain)
  • 1789
    • george washington elected first president (first president under the consitution)
  • 1865
    • north wins civil war (slavery abolished)
    • president lincoln assassinated
  • 1915
    • rms lusitania sunk (usa begins alliance with britain and france)
  • 1917
    • usa joins allies in world war I (aligned with britain, france, and russia)
  • 1918
    • world war I ends (signed an armistice to stop fighting)
  • 1929
    • usa stock market crashes (great depression started)
  • 1941
    • japan attacks pearl harbor (usa enters world war II)
  • 1945
    • allies (britain, soviet union, and usa) defeat axis (japan and germany)
    • usa drops atomic bombs on hiroshima and nagasaki (only atomic bombs ever used in war)
    • usa and soviet union divide germany (created east and west germany)
    • cold war starts (usa versus soviet union)
  • 1946
    • baby boom starts (huge population increase)
  • 1954
    • brown versus board of education (schools in the usa integrated; first step in the civil rights movement)
  • 1960
    • baby boom ends (population steady)
  • 1961
    • cuban missile crisis (usa and soviet union almost went to nuclear war over missiles in cuba)
  • 1963
    • president kennedy assassinated (lee harvey oswald suspected)
    • civil rights march in washington (mlk "i have a dream" speech)
  • 1965
    • usa enters war in vietnam (to stop domino effect of communism)
  • 1968
    • martin luther king, junior assassinated (greatest civil rights leader in our country)
    • robert f kennedy assassinated (probably would've been elected president)
  • 1973
    • usa leaves vietnam (we lost)
  • 1974
    • nixon resigns due to watergate (republicans stole information from democrats and nixon covered it up)
  • 1991
    • end of cold war (victory)
  • 1999
    • clinton impeached (lied under oath in lewinsky case)
  • 2001
    • 9/11 (terrorist attack on twin towers in nyc)
  • 2003
    • usa invades iraq (operation iraqi freedom)
  • 2008
    • barack obama elected president (first non-white president)
