  • my nai nai would sit by the stairs of the HDB and peel bean sprouts
  • playing pretend in an empty MindStretcher classroom after class and talking basically to myself until the real teacher walks in and I quickly scramble away from the whiteboard
  • getting those round tablet-chocolates that comes wrapped in a number-8 figure from the bookstore in primary school. It tasted nothing like M&Ms but it was 50 cents and M&Ms were a dollar-fifty.
  • carving initials of me and my crush with a heart-shape onto the blue tacky plastic classroom tables
  • nai nai patting my back while humming a chinese lullaby when I had to take afternoon naps and when she stopped patting my back, I would move and tap her hand so she would continue.
  • spotting ye ye in the crowd of parents at the school gate and running to him when he waved.
  • sitting on the back of ye ye's bicycle after school and he would ask me not to let go otherwise I would fall
  • after ye ye left singapore, it was mama who cycled me to school and to mindstretcher.
  • opening mama's lunchbox during recess and everyone would flock to me for a bite. I was so popular because of my lunchbox. Sometimes it was egg fried rice, sometimes it was chicken soup and rice, sometimes it was curry fish. Either way, I rarely ever ate from the school canteen. I don't even remember the stalls in school.
  • having to drag my table and chair in front of the whiteboard because I couldn't stop talking and disrupting the class with my chatter.
  • getting my sketchbook confiscated... and the worst part is I drew disturbing scenarios about my fantasies... like going shopping with my imaginary 3 children and my dream house with 6 dogs and a huge christmas workshop bread shop...
