- do “that thing” you’ve been putting off forever
- if you’re an artist, make some art. write? write something new. film-maker? make a film. maths enthusiast? erm, i don’t know. do some sums or something.
- the random train adventure challenge
- catchy name, right? i thought of it myself. i’m yet to do this but the next time i’m going mad with boredom, this is my plan. call up some friends. meet at a train station. pick a number (a reasonable one) and either get on the first bus you find and get off at that number stop (so if you choose ten, get off at the tenth stop) OR try and find a bus that corresponds to the number you’ve picked. who knows where you’ll end up! if i choose well, i can end up in london, which is kind of exciting.
- dinner parties
- me and my friends are being sophisticated grown-ups and hosting a series of dinner parties. so far each one has had a theme and they’ve been brilliant, watching someone else slave over a three-course meal for you is heaven.
- READ!
- for the love of god, read. i’ve been raised to be a bookworm but of course, i understand that other people aren’t. but read something, anything, that will make you happy. this kinda goes back to my first point, read something to do with what you love, or something you’re interested in but don’t know much about. for example, i’m doing a project about vegan cooking, therefore i’ve been reading a lot of vegan cookbooks and recipe websites
- find “your” TV show
- this year i've been unable to leave my house due to unforseen circumstances and, joy of joys, my internet broke. then my telly. then my oven. did i despair? no, i did not. instead, i remembered that my parents have every single season of six feet under on DVD and ploughed through them, discovering what was possibly the greatest TV show of all-time. there are so many options for this! recently i watched prison break and i’m on season four of parks and recreation. when the weather’s rainy (all summer long, basically) there’s nothing nicer than curling up with a coffee and a TV boxset.
- COOK
- recently i discovered i have an incredible talent for making desserts, both vegan and non-vegan. today i intend to see if this talent applies to other courses and make a three-course meal for my dad and i. cooking something new and exciting is always fun if you have a few hours to spare
- listen to the dreamiest of summer music
- it’s a universally-known fact that music can alter your mood, therefore even if the weather’s awful you can listen to something dreamy and summery and pretend you’re sunbathing in paradise. my personal favourite thing to do on sunny days is walk down to the beach listening to this
- go somewhere interesting and have a picnic
- this may seem like an obvious one but i mean it, go somewhere really interesting where you can learn something new! as soon as the weather cheers up, me and my friends are planning on going up to devil’s dyke, so called because people say that the devil was building a huge trench so that the sea would flood the churches of sussex. see? creepy and cool!
- TREAT YO SELF
- totally inspired by parks and rec. the premise is simple - a whole day about you. go shopping and buy whatever lavish and ridiculous items you want. stay in and eat a whole pot of ben and jerrys. sunbathe in your garden or in a park. the choice is yours.
- and finally…. document EVERYTHING
- do in in whatever way you want. you could do a scrapbook with a page summarising every day, keep a more straightforward journal, or even do something like making a short film of your summer. if you document your summer than you can look back at it and see that, even if you weren’t jetting off to exciting locations, you were still doing something great.
