classical conditioning:

  • US - unconditioned stimulus
  • NS - neutral stimulus
  • CS - conditioned stimulus
  • CR - conditioned response

responses to classical conditioning:

  • discriminate – excluding other stim to a response, only initial conditioned stimulus will evoke a response
  • generalize – expanding response from just the original CS
  • extinction - stopping the action of conditioning
  • spontaneous recovery - after extinction, you expose the participant to the stimulus again

additional info:

  • fetishes are an example of classical conditioning
  • fears are as well
  • when emotions are high the conditioning effect will be more potent
  • conditioned tolerance (ex. heroin)
  • the body/brain constantly works for homeostasis
  • this preemptive response can become conditioned to context
  • settings/places can also evoke bodily functions to help protect their body, even if no drugs are being taken in (yet)
  • overdoses can happen due to the drug being taken in another setting because the body isn’t conditioned in that area
