- Never accept a PhD position without full funding guaranteed either by fellowships, the school, or a combination. Anything less than that is a soft rejection. PhD-based work is not lucrative, like an MD, JD or MBA, and you are not expected to easily handle and pay off the debt like you would be with those other degrees.

Except in rare cases, like my friend who is a full-time behavior analyst and is getting a PhD because it will move her up her already established career. And she's not going into debt for it, either, she has the money saved up.
