Quiex II or "Quiex-like" vinyl appears black at first glance, but its translucence is revealed when held up to a bright light source. Quiex pressings are generally considered to be higher quality, but SQ varies. Quiex was a harder, purer vinyl (i.e. 'virgin vinyl') primarily used on WEA (Warner, Elektra, Atlantic) and A&M "first run" or promotional releases, but it does show up on other labels and regular releases as well. The Quiex era in the USA started in 1981 and ended in 1991. Color is typically amber/brown but may appear red, green or purple depending on the release or light source. The album cover may or may not include a black Quiex II oval-shaped sticker. Many titles are so-called "secret" Quiex pressings. These are translucent and were pressed during the Quiex era, but were not promoted (with cover stickers) as audiophile-grade pressings. Although Quiex pressings are somewhat limited, they are not uncommon. Many titles were pressed on both regular black vinyl and translucent Quiex vinyl, even in the same release year. Collectibility of Quiex vinyl is debated on Hoffman, Discogs and other music forums. Many claim they are just variations in the manufacturing process or that the use of Quiex doesn't significantly enhance the listening experience. It's a mixed bag in my experience. I have Quiex pressings that definitely sound superior, and others that do not.
