In the world of personal website design, there are n00bs. These are the mistakes I see in daily browsing of personal websites.

  • site
    • "hiatus" and/or "open hiatus"
    • intro pages...
    • free-server labels
    • excessive ads
    • "This site is best viewed in IE."
  • body
    • whitespace abuse
      • lack of padding
      • lack of margins
    • mis-aligned content in Firefox/Chrome
    • content resolution greater than 1024x768
    • scrollbar abuse
      • iFrames in Div areas
      • scrolling within divs
  • format
    • CuteNews
    • Blogspot
    • Webs
    • Piczo
  • content
    • "coming soon"
    • .JPG & .JPEG images
    • bad quality graphics/resources
    • page numbers as titles
    • image previews for free layouts
    • no visitor content
  • design
    • lack of color scheme
    • hard edged repeating backgrounds
    • .JPG & .JPEG images
    • myspace poop
      • glitter/blinking backgrounds
      • glitter/blinking titles or headers
    • widgets
    • automated music
    • serif x sans-serif
    • different layouts for every page
    • dotted/dashed borders or separaters
  • css
    • non-creative, boring css
    • non-fixed background
    • image links with [blue/dotted/any] borders
    • links/hovers that distort surrounding space
    • horrid typography
      • serif & sans-serif mixed and mingled
      • Times New Roman used incorrectly
      • Comic Sans used [at all]

Sure, these are just my pet peeves, but I'm sure most web designers would agree with me on most of these things.

Alas, I do not discriminate against newborn designers; Number 1: becuase it's the personal web realm, and Number 2: these young birds have yet to take flight in the industry.
