• Purchase a plastic bin/container with a tight-fitting lid, at least 24 inches in height.
  • Drill 8-10 small holes in the top and bottom of the container.
  • Place the bin in a shady area, out of direct sunlight.
  • Fill the bin 1/4 of the way with brown stuff:
    • Dead leaves and plants
    • Straw and hay
    • Old animal bedding
    • Cardboard
  • Fill the next 1/4 of the way with green stuff:
    • Grass clippings
    • Fruits and vegetables
    • Coffee grounds
    • Tea bags
  • Fill the rest of the bin, alternating between green and brown stuff, as well as assorted items and soil/starter compost, including:
    • Paper towels and bags
    • Egg shells
    • Cotton clothing
  • Keep the compost as wet as a wrung out sponge by spraying regularly.
  • Turn the pile regularly, once every week or two.
  • Avoid clumping large amounts of green stuff together.
  • Avoid adding tough branches, twigs, wood shavings, bread, pasta, meat, oil, cooked foods, nuts, magazines, and newspaper.
