- Purchase a plastic bin/container with a tight-fitting lid, at least 24 inches in height.
- Drill 8-10 small holes in the top and bottom of the container.
- Place the bin in a shady area, out of direct sunlight.
- Fill the bin 1/4 of the way with brown stuff:
- Dead leaves and plants
- Straw and hay
- Old animal bedding
- Cardboard
- Fill the next 1/4 of the way with green stuff:
- Grass clippings
- Fruits and vegetables
- Coffee grounds
- Tea bags
- Fill the rest of the bin, alternating between green and brown stuff, as well as assorted items and soil/starter compost, including:
- Paper towels and bags
- Egg shells
- Cotton clothing
- Keep the compost as wet as a wrung out sponge by spraying regularly.
- Turn the pile regularly, once every week or two.
- Avoid clumping large amounts of green stuff together.
- Avoid adding tough branches, twigs, wood shavings, bread, pasta, meat, oil, cooked foods, nuts, magazines, and newspaper.
