  • Try to eat only two or three meals a day by going to the dining halls and piling up, rather than eating through out the day, using up an unnecessary amount of meal plan "meals."
  • Pick up tickets for movies and shows at a discounted price at the NYU box office rather than paying full price elsewhere.
  • Either use my Starbucks card for coffee or get large to go cups from the dining hall and take it with me.
  • Only withdraw money at Chase ATMs to avoid additional charges.
  • When you can, buy whatever's cheapest, particularly when it comes to things like toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, etc.
  • Rent books, movies and magazines from the NYU Library, the New School Library or the New York Public Library or borrow movies from fellow students.
  • Only do the laundry when it's entirely necessary (i.e. you have no underwear or socks), generally about once a week.
  • Check out Jack's 99 cents store for everything!
  • Don't buy anything that requires dry cleaning.
  • Don't go to clubs, it's expensive and they suck anyway.
  • Buy clothes from second-hand stores and the Goodwill or wait for sales at larger stores like Nordstrom, Macy's, Topshop, Uniqlo, etc.
  • Either bum cigarettes or roll your own.
  • Buy cheap beer rather than expensive liquors.
  • Give homemade gifts and cards.
  • DON'T TAKE TAXI CABS.
  • Grocery shopping & food:
    • Clip coupons for Trader Joe's and other grocers.
    • Buy in bulk or large amounts whenever possible.
    • Accept free food or beverages whenever they're offered.
    • Don't shop at Whole Foods - it's way too expensive.
    • Check out food banks and soup kitchens as a free alternative.
    • Check out ethnic markets in places like Chinatown and Curry Row.
    • Get free meals by eating at the Episcopal Church on 5th Ave and/or the NYU Islamic Center on Sundays.
    • Two words: RAMEN NOODLES
