they say that the left brain is used for logic; left brain thinkers rely on lists and reason. the right brain uses intuition; the right brain thinker is sporadic and a daydreamer.

i'm a middle brain thinker.
this is my left brain.

fall 2009:

  • johnson. american history lover, with interest in african americans and slavery. balding, late 30's to mid 40's, wore suits [usually tan or beige in color]. despite afternoon class, always had coffee in a thermos or what i'm assuming is coffee since he mentioned it being coffee in lecture once. didn't pay attention too much, since material was the first half of high school ap u.s. history, using the same book. movies watched in class we on the humorous side. overall enjoyable.
  • supposedly the "bitchier" ta. was very nice, hair usually pulled back in a ponytail, not a harsh grader. looked best in just jeans and a tee and tank. kind of a sporty aura. fun-loving. made jokes. was human.
  • fortier. woman in her late 40's, early 50's. slow talker. voice successfully lulled me to sleep. maybe because it was 8am. went to lecture less than six times, dropped course since i didn't need it. subject said to be more intriguing [race, gender, class today, etc], once you go past learning a bunch of theories like marxism.
  • trujillo. liked to wear skirts, slim, looked fragile, thick black-rimmed glasses. woman in mid to late 40's. has her own family. seemed like vegetarian/vegan. wrote one of the books used in lecture; was actually intriguing. this woman was someone i wanted to know. interested in the few indigenous hunting &gathering groups that survive today. did field research on raute people [the subject of her book]. slides were basically lectures verbatim so no real need to go to class, exams were very simple if you remembered definitions and such. made me appreciate anthropology.

winter 2009:

  • sinha. indian descent, no accent, gold-rimmed glasses, graying hair, seemed a bit bored or annoyed with us at times. didn't notice people raising their hands even when he was supposedly looking around after asking "any questions?" assumed we already knew a lot of things, even though the entire class was pretty lost. generous curve, which was good for me since i knew nothing about chemistry upon taking this course. lectures were boring; he printed out slides for us, though.
  • british accent. didn't really know how to explain problems at times. pink backpack, curly hair. genuinely wanted to help, but maybe not the best person to do so.
  • silly, older chicano woman. loved her. she had a lot of stories about her own experiences as a fruit-picker and protester, etc. loved activism; cancelled class so students could participate in march 4 educational protests and again after the "compton cookout" incident. lectures were basically her telling us what happened in readings; no need to read at all. but i found the novels she chose intriguing. assigned films were good watches. enjoyed this class.
  • grad student. never let us forget that. picked on the "freshman", ie. me. replied to my email in a snarky way. was also a ta for warren writing. had a somewhat hobbling gait. nit-picky about essays, but had to give us all higher grades on one essay because the prof. said he graded too harshly. enjoyed this class, so enjoyed this section nevertheless.

spring 2010:

  • rushed into lecture the first day of class; no going over syllabus whatsoever. accent was difficult to understand; not particularly fluent in english. always looked over the exams once they were handed in, which made me feel stupid because it revealed how little i knew what i was doing. felt bad for him because he was actually trying, but the class failed. generous curve at end.
  • mid 40's, always had a blue thermos. lots of practice quizzes and tests. missed a lot of extra credit opportunities. wanted us to all do well. specialized in physical chemistry, &probably didn't realize how tricky his exams were. only around 10 people went to lecture by the end of the quarter. generous curve.
