- because kids notice things like that
- understand that they just want to make you proud
- (it is rather hard to make you proud if you don't show up)
- when they come to you with a problem, whatever the problem, it is The Most Important Problem In The World™
- treat it as such
- even when they don't come to you
- and sometimes, they don't want your advice, they just want someone to listen
- and commiserate
- you must commiserate
- also, 99% of the time, they want a hug, even if they say they don't
