I feel at home in the wilderness. It's part knowing that I'm sharing an experience with ancestors, part being away from people, and part having space to think about what really matters.

  • Once, whilst driving on the moors near where I grew up, I saw sunlight fall across the landscape in front of me in such a way that convinced me there is a higher power. The moment transcended physical reality.
  • Death Valley was intensely exciting to be in. Something about the dry wind that blows warm even at 11 pm in October. Sunset and sunrise are timeless there.
  • That Narnia-like forest in Quebec Province, but more importantly, the emptiness of the beautiful nature which surrounded our cabin.
  • Seeing the stars, whether from Furnace Creek or the shores of Mauritius. It allows us to step out of our short lives, into a much bigger arena—that timeless void we inhabit which no doubt teams with creatures and civilisations separated by nothing but space and time.
