(Taken from www.http://traumadissociation.com Please consider following this link to learn more in-depth information! I just have a short, watered-down version here!)

  • "A person with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), or a similar form of Other Specified Dissociative Disorder (previously called Dissociative Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, or DDNOS-1) has a fragmented personality. A person with DID experiences himself or herself as having separate identities, known as alters, or alternate identities. Alters take over control of the person's body or behavior at various times. Each can function independently. All the alters together make up the person's whole personality. Alters typically develop from dissociation caused by prolonged early childhood trauma, although attachment problems and persistent neglect in very early childhood are also known factors. People with alters may refer to their alters as "parts inside, aspects, facets, ways of being, voices, multiples, selves, ages of me, people, persons, individuals, spirits, demons, others," etc."
  • First off, that's a lot to take in! I know. It's also strange to others that this kind of thing does happen, especially in more western countries, although it has been recorded in China and also South Africa! So this is definitely something that should be taken seriously and not just "a fad".
  • DID/OSDD is not an excuse, but it is a reason. It's a very difficult, jarring and frustrating disorder a person could have.
  • It is NOT like Split, Sybil, or Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde. There is a lot of weird media stigma behind it. They make those with DID or other dissociative disorders come out as some crazy murderers! THAT IS NOT AT ALL WHAT THIS IS. We are more likely to hurt ourselves than others.
  • This is not a fad, or something fun or exciting. This is debilitating and a very, very tiresome disorder that has taken many, many years away from mine and other's lives. It causes self-harm, self-sabotage, and many years of isolation and confusion.
  • Not everyone wants to "integrate" their alters. Some people have lived so long with their alters and have had the time/effort/resources to allow their alters to explore their lives and live as different people. Some people really do not find peace in this and ultimately do try to seek integration or at least, complete host control of the body. There is NO wrong way to deal with your DID/OSDD unless it continues to hurt you or others around you.
  • Please consider that this is not a religious 'possession' from Satan/God This is extremely triggering, as there are many, many people who are (even surprising to me) victims of ritualistic abuse from religion. This has nothing to do with possession and needs to be kept away from this very debilitating MENTAL illness/coping mechanism for severe, repetitive abuse and neglect.

Everyone copes with their traumas, depression, and lives differently, and as long as the person is not hurting themselves or others around them, please treat all people with respect. We are all human and deserve to love and to be loved and heard. Please consider confronting me/us or others with a Dissociative Disorder with kindness and without vitriol and cruelty. We have already dealt with enough.
