interests
- what i found interesting - the significance of antigone as a woman being defiant of tyrant rule. her strength of character, fearlessness, and sense of duty towards her brother and the gods make her a most inspiring character in literature. her speeches were extremely powerful.
- what i learned - I basically had to look up all the theban lore to grasp this story lol and I am aware I am still missing something.
- fav quote - "we have only a little time to please the living. but all eternity to love the dead" + "so, do as you like, whatever suits you best— I will bury him myself".
books it reminded me of
- oedipus at colonus - I read this play about 8 years ago, so I must confess I do not remember anything about it. I might reread all plays in order if someone can convince me to lol (or if I end up seeing it performed one day).
- follow-up context research - I would like to go deeper into the legality of thebas and the role of creon as a tyrant during this time so I could understand it better. I was not familiar with a lot of folklore told by the choir, so I would love to go deeper into that too.
rating
- 3.75/5 - I believe I would have taken the significance of this story more if I had studied it in a classroom. I had to do a lot of research after finishing it so I could fully understand some points, but I don't think it is enough. in terms of the plot, well, it is a tragedy so multiple deaths are to be expected. I was not a fan of antigone's last scene, despite it doing a good job of showing her vulnerability- maybe I am wrong to expect more bravery in the face of death. I also wished I felt bad for creon but I really don't, and I wished the latter part of the play wasn't so focused on him considering who the main character is supposed to be. a powerful and still relevant story, nonetheless.
