professional color slide/transparency films (xpro: C-41 developed; funkier colors)

  • Fuji Astia 100 - for people
  • 120 Fuji Astia - pink/red, redder on bulb
  • Fuji Velvia - red/purple
  • Fuji Velvia 50 - bluish/greenish; for nature and landscapes (non-people)
  • Fuji Provia - bluish/greenish; non-people; under-expose when sun is very bright; pictures taken in shadow will look like silhouettes
  • Fuji Provia F - orange to red; for sky
  • Fuji Sensia 100 - yellows and oranges; good for sunsets; for people shots
  • Kodak EliteChrome - saturated while retaining true colors (warm tones); landscapes are heavy on the blue

consumer color negative films

  • 120 Fuji Superia - normal colors; great for night shots in bulb setting
  • 35 Fuji Superia Reala 100 - very good
  • 35 Kodak Proimage 100 - steady vignettes when used with LC-A (P60)
  • 35 Lucky 200 - second to Fuji Superia Reala
  • Fuji Pro 160S
  • Kodak Portra 160NC and 400NC

BW films (slides give sepia tones when cross-processed)

  • 120 400TX (TriX 400) - good for cloudy days or it can be used for sunny days with a 2 stop ND
  • Portra 400VC - for saturated colours; overcast with strong diffused light
  • 35 Kodak t400cn - very good; sepia hues capable during xpro; over-expose a bit to get good blacks
  • 35 Colpan 100 - very good; super dark blacks; cheap
  • 35 Lucky 100 - very good; not recommended
  • Kodak TMAX 100 - very sharp
  • Ilford XP-2 Super (C-41) - faded look
  • Neopan - also good; visible grain when enlarged
  • Agfa Scala - really nice mid tones. and since it is a reversal film you'd have to expose it properly (for the highlights compared to exposing for the shadows for regular b/w film)

Tips for exposing B&W

  • 1) load a ASA 400 film and down rate it to EI 200 meter off the dress and move it to ZVI (open up by one stop). Develop normally. This will save the highlight details and the shadow details. To boost contrast I'll the split grade printing method.
  • 2) Meter of the darkest shadow detail, then meter off the dress, calculate if the difference is over 5 stops. shoot to capture Shadow detail then contract development to bring out the highlight detail.
