• primer, 2004
    • tightly elaborate and unglamorous low-budget time travel brainteaser
    • perhaps less of a movie and more of a logic puzzle, but one of the most fascinating and rewarding logic puzzles i've seen
    • "and the sound... isn't the sound different, on the inside? it's, it's like it's singing. i guess you can't hear it on the outside. i had this dream in there."
  • the fall, 2006
    • visually astounding dreampiece
    • "you always stop at the same part, when it's very beautiful."
  • my neighbor totoro, 1988
    • please watch this
    • simple, gentle, and enchanting
    • i'm sure all of miyazaki's films belong on this list, but i chose this one for its softness and its personal significance
  • 3 idiots, 2009
    • i don't know if i have ever been filled with such sheer joy as i felt when i finished this movie
  • brazil, 1985
    • a bit of a haunting and bizarre sort of bureaucracy nightmare
    • wasn't too into it the first time through, but i had to watch it several times for a paper and eventually fell in love
    • one of my favorite movie endings of all time
  • infernal affairs, 2002
    • powerful and turbulent hong kong crime thriller
    • i have not watched the departed (the american adaptation) and may or may not do so eventually, but from what i hear, the two differ such that whichever you watch first will probably be the one you like more
  • the conversation, 1974
    • okay when i first heard the title of this film i assumed it was going to be something like my dinner with andre, a two-hour-long conversation, but it absolutely was nothing like that at all
