• How big is the zine?

6 x 9 inches, (229 x 152 mm) and perfect bound, 49+ pages not including covers.

  • Where will the profits go?

Profits will be split evenly among participating artists, as compensation for their hard work.

  • Will artists receive copies of the zine?

All participating artists will receive a copy of the zine and the full array of any extra goods we produce.

  • Can non North American artists apply?

Yes, of course!

  • Is traditional art acceptable?

Yes! We love traditional art and digital work equally.

  • What kind of illustration are you looking for?

The zine is general Houseki no Kuni with no overarching theme so the concept of your illustration is up to you. Bear in mind that if two or more artists have very similar pieces, they may be advised to make adjustments during first check-in.

  • What is the concept pitch in the application?

It is not a factor in jurying at all! If you do not wish to fill it out or don't have an illustration idea yet, that is fine! It is more so we can provide peace of mind for artists so that they won't accidentally end up with a very similar submission to someone else with not enough time to change it. Artist can run ideas by us after applications close for the same purpose.

  • Why are writers not included?

Neither organizer is a fiction writer by trade nor do we feel comfortable jurying a skillset that we have not developed. Also, the amount of real estate fanfiction takes up in physical form vs an illustration quickly runs up the cost of production and subsequently, the cost to the buyer. We do not mean to disparage writers and hope they can find more appropriate channels to share their work.

  • Who do I draw?

Anyone who has appeared in the manga is fair game. This includes any of the gems, sensei, the moon people, and the admirabilis. That said, this zine is technically spoiler friendly.

  • Are ships allowed?

Yes but please don't get too spicy.

  • What happens if I do get chosen?

If you are chosen, we will be in contact via email with further instructions including a template file if you need it. People who are not selected will still receive an email with our apologies.

  • I will be absent for a large portion of the zine period!

We realize the zine period overlaps with the holiday season. If this affects you, we can definitely try to work something out.

  • Is there an embargo period on my work?

Yes. We ask that, with the exception of teasers, you do not post your work online until after the zine has shipped. You will receive an email indicating when the embargo is over, after which you may do with your piece what you please.

  • Can artists order extra copies?

Yes, arrangements will be made near the final deadline if artists wish to buy extra copies of the zine only (ie, not the extra merch) at a reduced cost.

  • What are the extra copies for?

Artists can do with them what they wish. They are free to sell them in the convention circuit or give them to friends and family. Note we have no oversight over their resale in conventions including how they are priced or if artists want to create their own bundles.

  • Will artists get paid?

Yes, this is a for profit zine.

  • Do the organizers get paid?

The organizers are participating as artists and will receive the same dividend as everyone else. That said, a breakdown of revenue and costs/expenses, with associated receipts will be available for participating artists to view in the interest of transparency.
