for how old this game is (the 2000s), without a doubt you can tell how easily its gotten itself a whole entire franchise bcos theres so much to unravel regarding dante and his family. this is one of those games where you HAD to be there and i unfortunately was not able to live through its golden era but hey 26 years later ive gotten the opportunity to not larp anymore so yipee!
as much as i lwk had fun with this game, i also DESPISED this game ESPECIALLY for its ingame camera. its super hard to fight enemies when the camera keeps switching sceneries to the point where sometimes the enemy is not even VISIBLE for you to hit them (thats where you pull out your gun and shoot to see where dante is aiming at but sometimes he misses ok) and like theres boss fights eeeeverrryy sinngglleee timeee like HOLY SHIT give me a break PLEASE. and the fact that i can only carry ONE healing item is borderline insane. i just wished they couldve given the healing particles throughout fighting the bosses (especially against mundus bcos this guy had like 3 stages and you dont recover hp at ALL) my fave boss fight is the dark knight its actually easy to read him and dodge his attacks, same goes for the bird except for when it was at the pirate ship bcos like i said the camera angles especially in that damn pirate ship was HORRENDOUS and i was continuously LAUNCHED into the air 99% of the time i dont know how or why but it is what it is ig. i fucking hated nightmare though and it was a pain in the ass to fight both him AND trish at the same time. i still get shivers thinking about him...like not even mundus was as intimidating lwk...but one thing all of them had in common was that it left my hands shaking everytime THATS how bad it is
notice how ive only been talking about the combat? ya tbf this game is combat-centred i'd say about 20 minutes of the whole 4-9 hours (depends how long you take) you've committed to the game is actual lore. its really cute how trish went from betraying dante (not rlly bcos they werent actl working tgt to begin with but u get the idea) to actually siding with him as his sidekick and him saving her and giving her his mother's amulet bcos she resembles her is super cute! also the shop going from devil may cry to devils never cry is really cute too but eeehhhh it doesnt hit the same despite the message dante's trying to give.
that being said, right off the bat this game IS NOT for the weak who gives up really easily once they cant beat a boss after a certain amount of tries, lwk this was me every time i died to someone but i always managed to do it right when i told myself "if i dont kill it here im quitting" like i lwk jinxed myself in a good way...? 7/10 for me bcos the combat was excruciating to go through but i enjoyed and relished in the victory at the end so it was kinda worth only if you enjoy yourself and not if you hate yourself. i cant wait to dive into dmc2! i'd love to see these dante and trish interact more, i also really wanna know more about sparda and dante's mom, i already know about vergil (he mustve been the dark knight since after defeating him the amulet is combined and only dante and vergil has it so) but i also wanna know more about him this whole FAMILY is something i need to know NOW yk?
