- vegetable broth/chicken or beef stock - these make excellent bases for soups, stews, and chili
- whole wheat pasta - quick, easy, and healthier than normal pasta
- brown rice - a little more expensive than white rice, but worth it in the long run as it is much, much healthier
- curry powder/chili powder - I prefer my meals with a little bit of a kick, so I usually keep a spicy seasoning around
- extra virgin olive oil - excellent, and also a necessity, for cooking
- margarine - even when a recipe calls for butter, i don't use butter, i use this delicious replacement instead
- a big bag of chicken breasts - these are great because they can be used in a multitude of meals, poultry is generally pretty good for you supposing it isn't breaded and fried, and they can be frozen and thawed as called for
