Voice Casting Manifesto:

Lately, I've seen Los Angeles anime voice actors being frequently cast in several video games and animated series, and some of them don't even fit the role at all. That's because the system responsible for it prioritize efficiency, reliability, and familiarity than authenticity and fit. And that upsets me a lot. Below is my manifesto for voice casting:

  • Characters should have voice actors that fit the role. This is by far the most important part.
  • Avoid casting celebrities or high-profile names just because they're popular. I've seen this mistake in a lot of animated movies (Particularly DreamWorks and Illumination) and games that are voice directed by Cup of Tea Productions (Xenoblade Chronicles X and Fire Emblem Awakening onwards), and authenticity matters more than familiarity. Consider hiring a voice actor that fits the soul, feel, and connection to the character instead.
  • For characters that have a disability, sexual orientation, different skin colour, nationality, gender identity, etc..., hire a voice actor that has those same traits, but don't make it all about them. Make it about the energy and feel of the character.
  • Local talent matters, too, not just popular voice actors. Sometimes, they may surprise you with their performance.
