transcribed from my handy red notebook (written September 2015)

  • Arrival... Check in and arrivals treated the same. Same area, v small. (upon leaving I realized it was bigger than first let on)
  • Brought Brennivín on the plane, €8. So much cheaper than the store brought/pub stuff?
  • Got to our shit budget hotel room and they gave us the bare minimum x2 beds & drawers, and x1 toilet/shower. Think Mum was a little horrified. The walls looked like a soft asylum room.
  • Weather is sunny for ten minutes, then pissing down for the next ten. Most of the time it's cloudy.
  • Went up Hallgrímskirkja on our first day (knowing Amy was up there only a few hours beforehand!) Beautiful views but no lift music??? hahaha
  • All the roofs are different, vibrant colours.
  • Shark is sold for €5
  • Woke early on Friday to get to the Blue Lagoon. Our hotel person gave us the wrong station so we took thirty minutes longer getting lost and trying to find BSI.
  • Everyone in Blue Lagoon was naked. I am not prude, I just love my privacy...
  • Specific spots in the pools were boiling. American tourists everywhere.
  • Had a cherry slushie after a strawberry Skyr breakfast
  • For the night before, we had burgers and drinks at the Lebowski Bar. Only charged us for two drinks total, we felt bad afterwards but we didn't lie to them? Moved tables to eat and sat next to a young American couple. They were going on a pilgrimage around Spain (note: looking back now, probably the Camino) and wore full out hiking kit. The guy was beautiful.
  • Saw 3 guys from our plane. Nice to talk to, they were on their yearly holiday. Told us they used to club in our hometown.
  • Brennivín is quite gross
  • Blue Lagoon was a little more boring than you would expect. Although they didn't charge us for my cherry slushie (you lose some, you win some)
  • Coach back was nice. Weird weather, no wifi, and some good tunes. Amber Run, Fleet Foxes, & Sam Bruno.
  • Went to The Icelandic Phallological Museum. Lots of penises made me feel a bit sick.
  • Pub hoppin!!!
  • Lots of hipsters. Got those coffee shops, clothes, and bars.
  • Most people are friendly but can be a lil' pretentious
  • I love Skyr!
  • Laugavegur has great bars & shops.
  • Forgot to get soup in bread - must get it next time.
  • Found my taste for Icelandic beer. And beer in general...
  • Saw Harpa from the hill opposite. Massive
  • Tried to enter Dunkin Donuts but too busy. Settled on the rainbow street w/ cinnamon & sugar crêpe w/ blueberry ice cream.
  • Today (Sat 12th) we woke later than usual.
  • Went to the flea market (Kolaportið). Opposite is the harbor with descriptions & maps for all the ships.
  • Kolaportið was packed. Some of the things sold...
    • Incense
    • Octopus balls
    • Cat dress
    • Military books
    • Kleina (!!!)
    • Vinyl
    • Frozen hoodie
    • Cheap Monday & fur coat with fag burns
  • I really liked Kolaportið
  • Then found Reykjavik Art Museum
  • Had a teddy bear art exhibition with creepy waxed bears and nursery music in the background
  • Also a talented artist that created lots of Picasso-eque pieces
  • Led us to another gallery near our hotel. Boring with only one exhibition.
  • Before, Dunkin Donuts was finally empty. Boston Creme & Iced Latte.
  • Went to Bravó - the unofficial gay bar - and had two beers accompanied by lots of free wifi
  • After the museum we went to the City Hall. It was pissing down but the building was cool with it's large sculpture map of Iceland and the water level. There was also a woman's voting exhibition!
  • Went to a cafe which had tasty Chia Porridge.
  • Was a large talk going on in the protest park. We reckon it had something to do with the Syrian Refugee Crisis.
  • Beer! Beer! Beer! Gull & Viking everyday.
  • ROADTRIP
  • Important snacks: Cheez Itz, bacon rashers, Milka
  • Cloudy all the goddamn time but the landscape is . . .
  • Went up the mountain along the geysir. Finally had no issue with my asthma!
  • Visited geysir in the dark and it went off twice (a little eerie)
  • Gullfoss was indescribable
  • When we were leaving the geysir for the last time, it went off 3 times in a row
