I haven't worked in the record store for at least 3 months... here are some recommendations since I haven't heard any sucky albums lately, only the ones I've bought!
JarJar -- Luke -- Anakin -- Jabba -- Han Solo -- Greedo -- Lando -- Yoda -- Vader -- Boba Fett
- Jamie Lidell Jim: Vader. This album is awesome. It's even more poppy and R&B-like than the last one (you can't detect any traces of his past as an electronic music guy, that is), but it's still fun and up-beat without being cheesy.
- The Stills Oceans Will Rise: Vader. The songs on here are really catchy yet beautifully and interestingly arranged. All the instruments work well together, and the lyrics are awesomely depressing and dismal as usual. I love this band.
- Cut Copy In Ghost Colors: Yoda. Dance music that's seriously fun. Equal parts disco and indie rock that works on both listening and dancing levels.
- the Futureheads This is Not The World: Yoda. The problem with bands that sound like they were influenced by 80s music is the baby boomer-dominated press. I mean, if a band rips off the Beatles or the Doors, that's great. However, the second a band sounds like they may have listened to Joy Division or Echo & the Bunnymen in their youth, they automatically get listed as derivative and fleetingly trendy. Thus all the bands I like had sucky second albums where they tried to change their sound to less New Wavy. Not that the Futureheads' 2nd album sucked, it just went in a slightly different direction (see also: Bloc Party, the Killers, the Stills etc.). Anyway, their 3rd album sounds more like the first, and I like it.
- Elefant The Black Magic Show: Yoda. I liked Elefant's first album, but it bordered on a little too twee at times. this one takes all the preciousness out and adds a little depth & fullness to their sound. I think this may have come out last year, but I just found it recently in a stack of promos and listened to it.
- Clinic Do It! : Lando . I have all of Clinic's albums, and well, their shtick is getting a little old. 'Do It!'s a little more rocky and a little less jerky than previous albums, and relies less on the melodica for backing. I like it. However, all Clinic's songs and albums kind of begin to run together after a while.
- Nine Inch Nails The Slip : ?. I need to listen to this more often and more in depth. I'm old skool and still buy CDs. i don't like the way MP3s sound... yet I downloaded this album for free as it was offered. Anyway, because I don't have anything to put in my CD player (I know, I could buy a 'hard copy' but I'm cheap, OK?), I haven't listened to it much. Also, we're used to NIN putting out albums like every 5 years, which gives us a chance to obsess, absorb, pore over every word and note each album multiple times. Dude's put out 3 albums (one of them a double!) in 3 years. Rock on for being prolific, but I'm a bit overwhelmed!
- ¡Forward, Russia! Life Processes : Yoda This group has a very distinctive sound, and this album takes it and plays with it a lot more. 'Life Processes', their second album, is more melodic, less jerky, and less raw, but manages to incorporate all of this really well without sounding like they are selling out or dumbing down. Wow, evolution!
- Does It Offend You, Yeah? You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into : Vader.
- Beck Modern Guilt : Vader
- The Faint Fascination : Lando Why is this dude so obsessed with his own birth? This album doesn't particularly grab me, though it doesn't annoy me either. It doesn't really stick in my head and leave any kind of impression whatsoever. I think I'll have to either listen to it a ton more times to see if I like it or not.
- The Fratellis Here We Stand :
- British Sea Power Do You Like Rock Music? :
- Ladytron Velocifero :
