  • Turnabout Samurai (1-3) | it's a good middle case. the term 'filler case' kind of has a bad connotation (filler = unecessary) but i think that 'filler cases' have the important job of letting the main characters /breathe/ a bit; just spend time with each other cracking a case. turnabout samurai is exactly that. there's no huge over-arching plot relevance until the end (miles and his u n e c e s s a r y f e e l i n g s). we get to spend time with maya, and meet a group of mildly interesting people - plus penny nichols, the most underutilized AA character. i also like dee vasquez as a villain, and will powers is one of my fav defendants * sniff *
  • The First Turnabout (1-1) | even though it's a glorified tutorial case, it's a damn good tutorial case. i think it's such a good opener to gs1, and the series as a whole, because of mia and larry. this is the only time we interact as phoenix with mia when she's alive, and she really gives a great first impression. i think they do a great job establishing the work relationship that she has with her junior partner. larry also makes an impression as phoenix's unreasonable defendant slash unfortunate best friend. sure, the case isn't the most complex...but that wasn't really necessary for what 1-1 is there to do: introduce the game mechanics and introduce us to some of the series' mainstays.
  • Turnabout Sisters (1-2) | i wish this case was better. this premise deserved a better case. april may deserved a better case too. redd white is built up as a very imposing figure, but he's knocked down too easily in court; and the way that he is made to confess is really underwhelming. mia deserved to be killed by someone more worthy. the pacing isn't the best, and phoenix having to represent himself in the latter trial feels kind of unecessary. of course, the case is important because it's our first meeting of many vital characters (maya, gumshoe, edgeworth, grossberg), not to mention the death of mia is one of the most important moments in the series. like i said before, i'm also a fan of april. overall, though, the case is a mess.
  • Recipe For Turnabout (3-3) | i fucking hate this case. the only good thing about it is some godot foreshadowing w the apron, and i guess furio tigre's theme. furio tigre being able to successfully pose as phoenix while acting and looking nothing like him (aside from hair) and with a literal cardboard badge is really bad writing. the case only characters are shit, except for viola who is there to be pitied :( jean armstrong is abhorrently offensive, furio tigre is A LAME VILLAIN, the maid outfits could have been way better designed (even though i do appreciate their existence bc lots of fanartists love drawing phoenix in it :P) and victor kudo is really, really annoying. oh, and lisa basil sucks too. the case also drags for far too long.... damn, is there anything worth it in this case? the only good thing besides the godot stuff is maya calling furio "xin eohp".
  • The Lost Turnabout (2-1) | just awful. there's absolutely nothing good about this case, except for maggey if you squint (i don't even like her that much). it's so unecessary to the plot and they couldn't have made a worse case to open gs2 with.
