- Friday December 22,1978. After a day at work, Andrei Chikatilo heads out around the streets of Shakhty, a city in the Rostov Oblast, northwest of Rostov-on-Don. He begins to watch the people who come and go on the streets as night falls.
- Is is already dark when he spots a young girl, nine-year-old Yelena Zakotnova, waiting at a tram stop on the city streets, heading home after playing with a friend. She is wearing a red coat and a fur hat to protect her against the cold.
- Chikatilo crosses the street and strikes up a conversation with Yelena. To the young girl he seems friendly and unthreatening. She confesses that she badly needs to go to the bathroom, and Chikatilo offers to take her to his nearby house-actually a little more than a wooden hut-on nearby Mezhevoi Pereulok lane.
- Yelena goes with Chikatilo. As soon as they enter the house, Chikatilo launches a frantic attack on Yelena, ripping off her clothes and attempting to rape her. During this phase of the attack he makes Yelena bleed, a sight that sends him into a frenzy. He pulls out a knife and stabs her repeatedly.
- In a few horrifying minutes, Yelena is dead. Chikatilo waits a few hours then carries the dead girl plus her clothes and schoolbag down to the Grushevka River and disposes of them. The girl and her clothes go into the river but Chikatilo throws the bag too hard and it is lost in the opposite bank.
- Chikatilo heads back to the school at which he worked and cleans himself up. He then goes home before his wife returns from work.
