i would advise against:
- ils 209: if you want an easy a, go for it. but if you have a problem with 8:50 lectures three times a week and a professor who only reads handouts in monotone for fifty minutes, maybe you should pass. besides, the class should count for ethnic studies and doesn't, it's only good for humanities. there are better humanities classes, trust me.
- psych 202: even if you like psych, don't do it. i learned a lot, but the class was ridiculous. even with hours of effort each week, i barely pulled a bc. open book quizzes, yes. horrible exams, also yes. the class is a ton of fun, but it's a gpa killer. get your social science credit elsewhere.
- geo 110: super, super fun class. you learn a lot. bio credit for a non-bio class. but like psych, the exams are terrible. maybe you're a fan of classes where the lecture didn't follow the textbook but the exams were based on it. i'm not. three multiple choice exams sounds like a piece of cake until you realize that you need to know the scientific name and date of origin and extinction of every species talked about both in the book and in lecture. i studied for three days for the final and let's just say my grade was not awesome.
- lis 202: no. step away from whitmire. do not, under any circumstances, take this class. she lectures from wikipedia. her assignments aren't really assignments, they're more like independent research on a topic she hasn't officially given you. the class is entirely unstructured and basically a joke. sure, you'll get ethnic studies and it's a pretty easy class, but like ils, it's boring and you'll hate it.
you should take:
- lis 201: take it in the fall with downey. you'll talk about different technologies that have appeared over the years and briefly skim over different theories regarding them. there are three papers, all very open-ended, and one exam which might take a half hour at most. it was interesting, discussions were fun, and it counted for comm-b credit.
- spanish 204: i suppose it depends on your particular ta, but mine (sandra terra) was awesome. she explained everything very well, made optional review exercises for everything we learned, and was a generally fun teacher. not to mention, the novel at the end of the semester (rosaura a las diez) was really good.
i'm kind of indifferent to:
- j201: if you have an interest in the history of journalism, you should take it. if you want to apply to the j-school, you need to take it. if you're just looking for comm-b credit, you'll be bored out of your mind. ask around about the tas: like any class, some are better than others.
- spanish 203: i tested just below 204, so most of 203 was a review for me. i had a good ta (aneidys rodriguez) and learned a lot about grammar (the subjunctive is huge in 203), but the novel at the end (el gesticulador) was pure hell. uninteresting and difficult to comprehend.
