Buying Textbooks!! I'm gonna list some books but I personally don't have any experience or preference with most of them since the only book series I really used at the beginning isn't one I'd recommend. These are ones I've heard positive reviews about and I'll add the pros and cons I've seen!
- TTMIK Book Series (http://mykoreanstore.com/collections/books/grammar)
- $13 for a textbook, $25 for textbook with workbook
- Pros:
- it's light, compact, and has pretty colors & pictures
- it's not overwhelming
- Cons:
- it's basically the same-ish material you can find on their website for free
- it has a lot of romanization which i think isn't rly conducive to learning to read but...
- they only have up to level 4 i believe
- KLEAR Integrated Korean Series (http://www.amazon.com/Integrated-Korean-Beginning-Textbooks-Language/dp/0824834402/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8)
- it's like $19? the workbook is also about $19 but you can always buy it used
- Pros:
- this series is rather popular in college classes
- it gives a lot of practice
- it goes up to advanced level books
- you can buy it on amazon LMAO and get it pretty fast compared to a ~2 week wait...
- Cons:
- there's no answers to the exercises
- more geared toward classroom learning so it might not be good starting out
- Idk if they've updated their books but I have one of the first editions and there aren't really any pictures or colors?? Which is a con for me cus I love having visual aids...
- Ewha Textbook Series (http://www.twochois.com/ewha-korean-1-1-with-audio-cd-english-version/)
- $16 and $26 if you get the workbook too (you can also try looking on ebay for this)
- Pros:
- it's realllyy colorful and prettyy
- goes up to an advanced level as well
- they've started making study guides so there's extra supplemental material you can get!
- Cons:
- it uses IPA for learning hangeul but you know how to read hangeul so idk whatever lmao
- the workbook instructions are all in korean BUT honestly it's not hard to figure out
- Sogang Textbook Series (http://www.twochois.com/new-sogang-korean-1a-students-book/)
- $21 and $31 with workbook
- you can buy both 1a and 1b in a "compact" updated version of the book here (http://www.twochois.com/sogang-korean-compact-series-1/)
- Pros:
- really colorful and lots o pictures!
- i believe this also goes up to an advanced level
- it's another pretty popular series
- Cons:
- im actually not sure if it has an answer key...
These books aren't ones I'd recommend using alone for starting out but the Korean Grammar in Use books are REALLY NICE... Good for grammars.. (I sent a pdf of the first book to you btw)
If you see any other books you might be interested in but want a second opinion on feel free to ask me!! Same if you want to know more about the ones I've listed here, I'm happy to help you decide more. My own preference based on these though, I'm mostly interested in the Ewha series? I've heard a lot of good things about it and it looks really nice. If I had the money I wanna try one of their books....
