- When we're feeling a bit low, the simplest things might sparkle a laugh out of us, makes us feel a bit warmer and leave with us the conviction that maybe, just maybe, things are not so bad. And although I've found myself feeling that way with plenty of TV series, my pick today is a fairly recent sitcom named Brooklyn Nine Nine, that now has its third season on air.
- B99, "set in the fictional precinct of the New York City Police Department in Brooklyn, follows a team of detectives and the newly appointed captain", Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher); and their day-to-day adventures.
- Presenting us with an array of well-thought and realistic characterisations, this series provides us a relaxed and entertaining view to the team's personal and private life. Starring an incredibly diverse group of actors such as Stephanie Beatriz (as Rosa Diaz), Andy Samberg (Jake Peralta), Terry Crews (Terry Jeffords), Melissa Fumero (Amy Santiago), Chelsea Peretti (Gina Linetti) and Joe Lo Truglio (Charles Boyle), B99 provides exactly what I've found to be rare in many sitcoms- a humour that shies away from belittling people's feeling as well as stereotypes, racism, sexism, homophobia and so on. And that's what makes it so special.
- It shows a safe environment between colleagues-who are not only that, but also friends- where individual growth is stimulated and supported amongst the team.
- By now, you must be thinking 'What an unrealistic portrayal' but this series allows plenty of mistakes that society can relate to, which aren't there just to make it down to earth but in order to address them in front of its audience instead of being the easy punchline of a joke.
- It was, in fact, the praise I had begun to see soon after the series premiered that led me to never missing an episode of this incredibly fun and light series that I am now recommending to our readers. Give it a try and you will not regret it! Tune in to Fox, 8 p.m. on Tuesdays. Just do it.
