- set small goals, like starting a conversation with someone you’d like to know better or walking to the local shop
- before you go to sleep, try zoning in on five things that have gone well during the day - repeat this each day for a week and see if you notice a difference in your general mood
- try saying things out loud; you might start to question how accurate these thoughts really are. ask yourself why you’re thinking that and what evidence you have to support it. it can help you get some perspective
- create your own ‘list of distractions’ which will help you to escape negative thoughts. Ideally, these are activities you enjoy but ones which require your full attention - this means you become totally focused on the activity itself, rather than on your thoughts or feelings. you need to do this activity for a concentrated period of time to help get rid of those negative thoughts and feelings
- listening to ‘uplifting’ music can boost your mental state and especially your ability to concentrate and stay alert
- writing your thoughts down can help you see them more clearly and make better sense of them
