- Bad experience: 4 classes
9th grade
- Algebra I Honors
- This class sucked. The teacher disliked me (he is seriously a brilliant teacher, though), I constantly fell asleep, and did very poorly on tests.
- Band (in-school and after-school)
- Favorite part of my day- we had the best, funniest, and most creative and talented band director in existence.
- Biology Honors
- AMAZING teacher- she talked about the impending apocalypse ALL THE TIME, hard class but she made it fun. I managed to squeak by with low Bs, which in retrospect was a bad thing, because it qualified me for honors Chemistry..
- Citizenship and Government
- This class was a waste of fucking time. Mr. Z was a cool guy, though.
- Introduction to Catholicism and Hebrew Scriptures
- MR. LAJOIE! Literally the nicest human being on the face of the Earth. Kind of treated everyone like we were 5 years old, but that's okay. Played lots of games. Watched Veggie Tales, etc.
- Introduction to Literature Honors
- Oh, Mrs. Thistle- you and your infinite wisdom. I tried so hard to impress you, and managed to succeed in doing so over and over again. You helped make me the writer I am today! I really enjoyed this class. I was introduced to amazing novels and became a much better writer/thinker/student.
- Microsoft Office Applications
- Boring. Learned a lot about Excel I didn't previously know, though. Really nice teacher.
- Physical Education
- CLASS OF DEATH. Difficult to get an A (though I managed to!) Mr. L was a drill sergeant..I honestly have lost count of how many different warm-ups we were forced to do every class period.
- Spanish II Honors
- Pretty easy. I was intimidated being in a class with so many older students, but it wasn't all that bad.
10th grade
- Band Honors (in-school and after-school)
- Band was still amazing this year. This was also the year of the SEATTLE TRIP. One of the best weeks of my life.
- Chemistry Honors
- Death. Ruined my chance (literally, if not for my grade in this class, would've had it) at 4 Year Honor Roll status. Terrible teacher. Almost everyone failed the final exam. I consistently scored < 50% on quizzes and tests. DEATH. DEATH. DEATH.
- Christian Scriptures and World Religions
- Teacher = sweetheart, but not very intelligent. It was painful. We had to read a terrible book called The Bronze Bow. I survived.
- Geometry Intermediate
- Teacher = really not the brightest crayon in the box. Decent at math, though. Fun class- we goofed off constantly and were only seriously reprimanded a few times. Got insanely high grades (112% on the midterm) and then for some reason did very badly on the final..hmmm.
- Health
- MR. GREENWELL- this man changed my life. I miss the fucking shit out of him. He left the year after I had him; thank God I had the chance to learn from him.
- Spanish III Honors
- Was this the year we had that god-awful substitute for months? I think so. I don't remember anything from this class.
- World History Honors
- One of the best teachers I've ever had, seriously. Very young, too, but brilliant, witty, and so knowledgeable. Thoroughly enjoyed this class, and not just because he told me I was writing at a grad-student level at 16 years old :)
- World Literature Honors
- MURPH DAWG. This man, despite how crazy he drove me during high school, specifically during rehearsals and whatnot, is one of my heroes. I love him, and all of his insanity. I feel like he exposed me to so many incredible things, and that he helped me realize just how amazing I am, most of the time. He's also fucking hilarious, and very comfortable with who he is- and I truly admire that.
11th grade
- Algebra II Honors
- Liked the teacher as a human being, but not as a teacher. Still, she was really accommodating of me missing class for debate and always gave me extra help. Difficult class.
- Band Honors (in-school)
- The reign of the world's biggest asshole began. Needless to say I barely stayed in band for the first semester of the year.
- Biology AP
- AP score: 2
- Teacher = wonderfully nice, warm woman. Not the greatest teacher. I really enjoyed this class even though it was very hard for me. I loved the labs especially. Managed to BARELY get a final grade of a B-!!
- English Language and Composition AP
- AP score: 5
- Dr. P. Quite possibly the woman I look up to most in life, besides my mom and grandmothers. She is just..incredible. Independent, intelligent, caring, and endlessly wise. She helped me through some very rough times, furthered my love of literature, and encouraged me to never stop expressing myself. I miss her so much.
- Ethics
- UGH. I don't really want to talk about this class, or think about it, EVER AGAIN.
- Justice
- Media Studies
- Another MURPH DAWG class. Met Matt- that was definitely the highlight of this class. We tore through a copy of Twilight, proofread it, and added our own commentary in the margins. Murph once suggested Matt bathe in Gatorade. I dunno. Didn't learn much of anything, but met one of my best friends, so.
- Physiology of Exercise
- Good class! Ms. N was a sweetie. So easy. I think everyone got an A or an A+. Actually learned quite a bit, now that I think about it. It was also a great time to catch up on homework.
- Spanish IV Honors
- Mehhh. Love Mrs. P, not too fond of her teaching style. This was the year we read The Little Prince, though, which was awesome. Also loved my class- we'd been together since my freshman year, and this was our last year together since most everyone graduated in 09.
- United States History AP
- AP score: 4
- Didn't hate DB as much as everyone else- mostly because after a few months she really took a liking to me, and I started getting 90s or higher on all of my work. She definitely played favorites, though, and graded essays while drunk, made inappropriate political remarks, and criticized students' appearances. Oh, DB. I remember that time you wandered off in a Chicago airport and almost crashed a van...
12th grade
- Christian Living
- This class was actually a-okay. I didn't hate it as much as I expected to, that's for sure. And I thought I was going to fucking HATE it. Mr. C was so nice.
- Comparative Government AP
- AP score: 4
- Another class with brilliant teacher (same teacher as World History). Actually full of intelligent people for a change! Had great class discussions and learned a LOT in just one semester. I also mastered the art of writing a ten page paper in one night..
- Economics Honors
- Don't even get me started. Thank GOD CS was in that class, because...well, we taught Mr. G a few lessons about capitalism. Although I think Mr. G is a charming and fairly attractive individual, I do not think he is qualified to teach Economics. Or anything else, for that matter. All he wants to do is talk about the Lorax and make stupid jokes. Kind of a fun class sometimes.
- First Responder
- Learned a good deal. Super-easy. "Super" might be an understatement, actually.
- Government and Politics AP
- AP score: 5
- This class was insanely easy for me thanks to the wealth of knowledge debate has provided me with. Very fun, although Coach's antics were mildly terrifying at times. Especially when his pants started to fall down and he talked about the prostitutes he used to hang out with..I have fond memories of him screaming my last name and asking me my feelings about same-sex marriage though. I think I may have screamed at him a couple hundred times.
- Literature and Composition AP
- AP score: 5
- Probably the best teacher I had in high school. I honestly think this woman is a genius; her IQ must be off the charts. Not only is she BRILLIANT, but she is clever, snarky, sarcastic, and very very kind and understanding. All-in-all, I am aspiring to become more like her throughout the course of my life. She also cultivated my love of Thomas Hardy and Nietzsche, so what more can I say? Thank you Mrs. S!
- Physics
- My debate coach was my teacher, which is quite honestly the only reason I did reasonably well in this class. Though, it was a LOT easier for me than chemistry was. I remember when Beau got electrocuted (deliberately, at the hands of aforementioned teacher..)
- Spanish V Honors
- Basically the same as Spanish IV, same teacher too. Worse class. Torture. Everyone hated it. EVERYONE. We wanted to read Pablo Neruda and sing songs in Spanish, and instead were forced to review grammar for the 4th year in a row.
- Spiritual Themes in Film
- Favorite class of high school. Changed my life, made me more open-minded and thoughtful. I am tearing up thinking about this class and the teacher (who I fucking ADORE- that's not even a strong enough word, really). THIS CLASS WAS SO PERFECT.
- Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus
- Amazing teacher- one of the warmest, friendliest people I know. Very easy class for me. Enjoyed it, and was very glad I didn't take honors math.
