Before the ranting starts (this is a very long & very snarky list), it should be noted: in case you couldn't tell (and frankly, it was obvious), "Funk" was intended to air before last week's episode, "Theatricality." Evidently, FOX/Ryan Murphy/someone cared more about May sweeps than preserving what little continuity & common sense the show still held. Thus, the episodes were switched and both were heavily - and badly- edited and restructured to fit this change. Despite this, sadly, I am positive that the glaring continuity errors and contradictions only accounted for about 30% of the atrocity of this episode.

  • Rachel was in a FUNK because Jesse revolted to Vocal Adrenaline, which put the rest of the Glee kids in a FUNK because now VA has the advantage again. Mr. Schue was in a FUNK because of his divorce and was tired of Sue trying to FUNK around with Glee so he decided to put her in a FUNK by pretending to seduce her. It was FUNKED UP. To break everybody out of their FUNK, Schue decided to have the kids study FUNK, which lead to a lot of songs that mentioned FUNK but had very little to do with FUNK. However, New Directions' take on FUNK put Vocal Adrenaline in a FUNK because apparently FUNK is the one area where they are FUNKED. HEY KIDS, CAN YOU GUESS WHAT THE TITLE OF THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS?
    • Keeping with the theme of the episode, I would just like to say: Jesse St. James, FUNK ME.
  • I am fully of the mindset that Jonathan Groff should be everywhere at all times and sing everything all the time, therefore, until "Funk," I was kind of hoping they'd find a way to bring him back next season. I no longer feel this way. The man deserves better. (And also I really don't know if I can handle watching another season of this show, Sweet Jesus.) I realize that the completely random, abrupt and unnecessary villainization of his character may have been a result of the episode switch, but the fact is, this is now the show's continuity, it happened, it sucks and most grievously, it doesn't make sense. WE know he wasn't there to mess with Rachel's head, he was there to get her to meet Shelby (who, in another nonsensical continuity issue, was present in this episode even though she totally peaced out last week after finally meeting Rachel!). Will Rachel ever learn Jesse's true purpose or was that sacrificed in the edit?
    • I really wonder what in the world was in the scenes that were edited out. In "Dream On" (which was supposed to be this episode's predecessor), Jesse was confessing actual feelings for Rachel. To go from "I don't want to see her hurt" to "I LOVED you --egg smash--" is a big leap, even for this show.
        • BTW, why was orange jam coming out of those eggs?
          • Speaking of editing crimes against Groff, can I just yell a big funkin' FINALLY because they let him sing again? "Oh, I know, let's hire this super awesome, Tony-nominated dude and then have him stand around and look hot for like 6 episodes. Oh, and I guess we should let him sing like twice."
            • There have been TWO deleted/bonus songs released on iTunes so far featuring Groff. I CAN HAZ DELETED SCENES ON DVD PLZ?
  • Continuing with my shallow & unprofessional comments, why was Puck randomly super hot this week? I'm blaming the Beck song.
    • "Good Vibrations" totally killed it for me, though. I don't even know what the funk that was.
  • Finn was back to being super adorable this week, too.
    • And again, "Good Vibrations" kind of killed that too.
  • I am by no means a "Puckleberry" shipper, but I inexplicably got super excited when Puck was going to go funk up Jesse in defense of Rachel.
    • OMG Puck vs. Jesse = Pay Per View event that must happen. Or dream I must have. Maybe both.
  • Remember "Home," another painfully subpar episode? Well apparently the writers don't, because the Quinn/Mercedes storyline here seemed awfully familiar and kind of nonsensical if you consider the events of "Home."
    • And how does one go from "OMG STFU you're not a minority!" to "OMG BFFs, come live with me!" in a 12 second span?
  • Dianna Agron is adorable & I've missed Quinn's presence in recent episodes but I don't even know what to say about her storyline here. Comparing a pregnant cheerleader to a minority is absurd enough, but they didn't even remotely try to back up the claim. Quinn said she was "angry" and "hurt" because she'd been shunned by the school, but she's been so largely ignored by these back nine episodes, this was the first we'd heard of it and we certainly hadn't seen it, thus it was hard to buy her story.
    • I think most people would agree that Dianna Agron is probably the weakest singer in the cast. So I am completely flabbergasted that they would saddle her with such a technically challenging song in "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." ESPECIALLY one that was covered so famously by Christina Aguilera.
      • Lamaze breathing as background vocals? Seriously?
  • I don't really want to talk at all about the Will/Sue story. It was nonsense, filler, unfunny, unbelievable, uncomfortable, implausible and damn near irredeemable. I don't know if I was supposed to feel awkward or amused, I don't know whose side I was supposed to be on and I don't see what the point of it all was.
    • The only good thing to come out of this plot was seeing Sue's date outfit: tracksuit and pearls.
  • Does it defeat the purpose of the show if I honestly think Vocal Adrenaline is like way better than New Directions? I mean, they choose better songs, they have better choreography, but mainly THEY ACTUALLY SOUND LIKE A SHOW CHOIR and not just a bunch of producers trying to sell me cover songs on iTunes.
  • Honestly, the best part of "Funk" was getting to see the first Scott Pilgrim TV spot. I DVR-d "Funk," which means I now have this ad on DVR to watch at my leisure. Almost makes it all worth it.
