  • Housing in the area is allocated depending on your job.
  • Polar bear signs show mark the area that is safe to walk around without a weapon. If you go past these signs then it is highly recommended that you are accompanied by a guide with a weapon because of the threat of polar bear attacks.
  • If you feel that you are in danger of being attacked by a polar bear you must first shoot warning shots (shoot in the air) in the hope that you scare away the polar bear and don’t have to harm the animal.
  • There are more snowmobiles than cars.
  • You are expected to take off your shoes when entering any building on the island, this includes, restaurants, shops, hotels, museums.
  • Each year there are many more babies born in the September and October months because of the dark season.
