  • Prompt: Shakespeare on Stage and Screen. In our televisual culture, most people experience Shakespeare through film more often than on stage. But many screen versions of Shakespeare find direct or indirect ways to refer to a play’s culture of origin and the theatrical practices of early modern English theatre. Choose one film version of a play by Shakespeare. Discuss the ways in which this film negotiates a relationship between contemporary cinema and the early modern English theatre practices inscribed in the text of the play. (You can’t only talk about the film; you can’t only talk about the text; you’ve got to talk about theatre history, too.)
