January

  • Beasts of the Southern Wild
    • Hadn't seen this movie before. What I saw wasn't really compelling enough to try and finish the whole thing... so I just ended up reading the end on Wikipedia. Hahaha. One of those movies where the trailer makes the movie seem more awesome then it actually is.
  • I Am Legend
  • The Fellowship of the Ring
  • Sin City
  • V/H/S
    • ★★★ - A series of short horror films, filmed in the "Paranormal Activity" style. Better than Paranormal Activity, but not great. A lot of the stories were pretty unique and had good catches/plot twists, and were all tied together by a central story. Worth watching, but not the best horror film you'll ever see.
  • Brazil
    • Never seen before, need to finish watching it. Kind of like a mix of 1984, Blade Runner, and The Capitol in The Hunger Games, but with a bit of satirical humour in it. Also a very weird role for Dustin Hoffman.
  • Trollhunter
    • Was really surprised by this movie, but didn't have the time to finish it. Like Blair Witch Project meets Norwegian fairy tales. A group of Norwegian college students follow a guy they want to interview for their documentary who they believe is poaching bears, but it turns out he's hunting trolls for the Norwegian government!
  • Jiro Dreams of Sushi
    • Looked promising. Will probably watch it all the way, eventually.
  • Scary Movie
    • ★★ ½ - So retarded. Has some pretty funny scenes that make it worth watching, but don't expect anything cerebral or really great. Basically slapstick that pokes fun at popular horror films.

February

  • Jurassic Park
  • Drive
    • ★★★★ - Wow! A really great film. Ryan Gosling stars as a guy who stunt drives during the day and acts as a getaway driving during the night. Only four stars because it starts out pretty slow, but once the action kicks in, you won't be disappointed. Also four stars due to the frequency of awkward silences and for too many "artsy" silent scenes. Overall, DEFINITELY worth watching, though!
  • Robin Hood: Men In Tights
    • ★★★★ - I can't believe it took me so long to see this movie. Sooo funny, cheesy, and pun-filled. Some of the jokes are kind of retarded and not funny, but that's expected with most Mel Brooks films. Reminds me of The Princess Bride, but with less "serious" scenes. You also can't miss what belongs to "the key to the greatest treasure in all the land!" Hahaha.
  • Fargo
  • Snatch
  • Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
  • Joe Kidd
    • Mostly just listened to this film while working on an art project. Sounded promising! :P
  • High Plains Drifter
    • ★★★★½ - A "WOAH WTF DID I JUST WATCH" kind of movie. Clint Eastwood plays a guy who comes back from the dead to exact punishment/revenge on a corrupt town responsible for whipping/beating him to death. Really trippy! The only thing that keeps me from giving it five stars is that there are at least one or two scenes that were unnecessarily "violent," I guess, or weird. Overall, Clint Eastwood wins though.

  • The Princess Bride
  • Westworld
  • The Perks of Being A Wallflower
    • ★★★★★ - I was really scared to watch this movie for a long time because the book was my absolute favourite thing in high school, and I was worried they'd do a terrible job of it. But I'm really happy because it turned out amazing! The cast was perfect and I got all emotional and shit. So, overall great job. Watch it.
  • Fight Club
  • Oz The Great and Powerful
    • ★★★★ - I thought it was really cute and clever. I have kind of a closet obsession with Wizard of Oz movies that probably started when I saw Return to Oz as a child. The movie is basically about how the Wizard first came to Oz. The cast did a really good job – James Franco was an excellent Oz, and I loved Mila Kunis as Theodora. I also really appreciated all the little things from the original Wizard of Oz that they included in this movie, such as Glinda riding around in bubbles, and the dramatic explosions when Oz talks to everybody from a smoke cloud. The only aspect I didn't like was how most of the eye-candy was so obviously included for the sake of 3D. But putting that aside, it was a very good film.
  • How Beer Saved the World
    • ★★★★ - What a crazy documentary!! Who could've known that the basis of our civilization came from a love of beer. It explains how the discovery that fermented barley was something yummy to drink led towards the first stages of agriculture, language, currency, and more. There are some areas where the explanation is a little weak, but it was very surprising to see how influential beer has been in the world.
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  • Anna Karenina (2012)
    • ★★★½ - I really, really wanted to love the shit out of this movie, because I really really loved the book. And parts of the movie I did love! I think the style was what hindered the movie the most. I understand why they filmed it the way they did – I get the symbolism and that it's kind of like watching a play, but you're not watching a play, you're watching a movie. And I felt too much time was spent with the filmmakers basically saying "LOOK!! Look at this awesome technique we're using!!1" Rather than concentrating on the story. The cast was amazing, and I feel like it had great potential; and they did give justice to the story. It was just a bit distracting and weird in many aspects.

  • Matilda
  • James and the Giant Peach
  • Jurassic Park in IMAX 3D
    • ★★★★ - Jurassic Park as you know it and love it but in kickass 3D awesomeness. Totally worth the money.
  • The Hunger Games
  • The Shining
  • Falling Down
  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
  • Muriel's Wedding
  • Django Unchained
    • ★★★★½ - This movie was so awesome! I think it may be my new favourite Quentin Tarantino movie, which is saying a lot because I really loved Inglourious Basterds. Django is a slave who is freed by a German bounty hunter. The two become bounty hunters together, and set out on a "quest" to save Django's beloved Broomhilda, who's enslaved by a psychotic plantation owner. Really creatively done, (definitely spaghetti western-inspired... I half wondered when Clint Eastwood was gonna pop up haha), amazing cinematography, soundtrack – totally worth the (almost) three hours it lasts. Also, Leonardo DiCaprio's performance is INSANE. I can't believe the dinner scene was unscripted. The man needs to win an Oscar before he offs someone. Overall, I definitely recommend this movie.

  • Star Trek: Into Darkness
    • ★★★★ - This was a really great Star Trek movie! A lot of people are bitching because they don't like Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan, or they think J.J. Abrams was a stupid choice for director, but honestly, I thought it was a really good adaption. I was worried it was just going to be a complete copy of the original Wrath of Khan movie, but they quite creatively made it so it was both a Star Trek movie and it's own unique thing. I would definitely recommend people to watch this film!
  • Spirited Away

June

  • Blade Runner
  • Super High Me
    • ★★½ - Basically a documentary equivalent to Super Size Me, except the person smokes pot for 30 days instead of eating MacDonald's food for 30 days. The premise was interesting, both scientifically and from the standpoint of someone who is interested in how bad marijuana is compared to other drugs. I do wish that it had been from the perspective of someone who was less "pro-pot" and more from someone who is neutral on the whole thing. Because near the end, it was basically just propaganda about how marijuana is awesome and the government sucks for not legalizing it. I didn't really care about that. I was more interested in the scientific side of things. So, interesting premise, but it really wandered.
  • The House at the End of the Street
    • ★★★ - OK I'll be honest, my main reason for watching this is because I love Jennifer Lawrence. The movie turned out to be fairly decent. The basic plot centers around a girl and her single mom who move to a small community in the "wilderness." They soon find out that their neighbor was the child of two parents who were brutally murdered by their young daughter several years before. Now I love when movies have interesting plot twists, and this one did provide one, (not to the scale of The Sixth Sense or anything, but it was decent). The movie went pretty well, but near the end I was really annoyed by the typical, stupid-horror-movie-girl actions. And I felt like about half-way through the movie, the plot started progressing really fast, and didn't do much development compared to the first half of the movie.

    • ★★★★ - I really liked this film! It kind of reminded me of Zombieland except with more chick-flick in it. Probably the only zombie film out there you could call romantic or cute. My only complaint is that it was somewhat slow in parts.

  • Cave of Forgotten Dreams
    • ★★★ - This documentary was recommended to me a while ago by my former boss. It's about the Chauvet Cave in France, in which explorers discovered extremely well-preserved cave paintings and animal skeletons/footprints from 10,000-30,000 years ago. It's really fascinating and well-filmed, but like my boss told me, I wish the narrator and stupid music would just shut up. You're trying to concentrate on the images presented to you, while listening to a narrator pulling "deep" thoughts out of nowhere and blasting loud music. I've concluded that Werner Herzog pretty much just loves to hear himself talk. However, the material of the film is very amazing and worth trying to ignore those bad elements for.

    • ✭✭✭ - Really weird, I always knew Macauley Culkin was a little creep. This was one of those movies that had you screaming at the characters, "NO YOU STUPID IDIOT DON'T DO THAT. LISTEN TO THE LITTLE BOY." Ya know? It was a suspenseful film and worth watching for the pure creepiness of Culkin's character, and the good job both him and Elijah Wood did in acting. However, if you're looking for a truly unique, unexpected horror movie, this isn't it.
  • Galaxy Quest
  • Requiem for a Dream
    • ✭✭✭ - Requiem for a Dream charts the addictions of a young man, Harry, his girlfriend Marian, and Harry's widowed mother. Harry and Marian are on heroin and cocaine, and his mother becomes addicted to amphetamine diet pills. The movie follows the progression of their addictions, and the steady decline of their lives. This movie is VERY hard to watch, and it isn't really fun to watch. It's very graphic and disturbing, especially if you're in an emotional state already. But I think it has an important message about drug use and its dangers. I've known people to use this movie as a tool to convince people why drugs are bad, and I can definitely see how it would be very affective.

  • Carrie
    • ✭✭✭ - Definitely a Stephen King creation, that's for sure. I actually liked it quite a bit, which I didn't expect because I'd heard so much negative reviews and seen such parody of it. But it was actually well done, and I was surprised because I never made the connection that it was Sissy Spacek in it, (whom I love). Carrie centers around a teenage girl who is abused by her mother and tortured by her peers. Soon, she discovers she has psychic abilities. The moral of the story is, don't bully the weird girl, because she might be a telekinetic about to snap. The downside to this movie was that many of the scenes were drawn out waaaaaay longer than they needed to be. SPOILER For instance, in the time it takes for Carrie to be crowned Prom Queen to the "bad guys" to dump the blood on her, there is probably a 5+ minute, slo-mo scene, just of Carrie waving and being happy. It takes 5 minutes or more for the blood to get dumped. Idk it just seemed like they said "Oh we need some more time in this movie." Other than that, it was good!
  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
    • ✭✭✭½ - This movie was partly what I expected, and partly not what I expected. It centers around these two characters who go to Las Vegas to cover a race for a magazine they work for. But the real center of the story is them taking every drug imaginable (basically) on their way there and the entire time they are there, and each drug trip they go through. It's really quite funny, and Johnny Depp does a great job. Although, it does seem like one of those movies where, if you haven't seen it a bunch of times, or read the book (or Wiki article) beforehand, it's REALLY hard to follow what's going on. My boyfriend, whom I watched it with, and who has seen the movie previously, didn't even have answers for a few of the scenes that were just "What the fuck?" However, it is definitely worth watching for its cult-classic status, and Johnny Depp's performance.

October

  • World War Z
    • ✭✭✭✭ - THIS WAS THE MOST STRESSFUL MOVIE I'VE SEEN ALL YEAR. I just need to say that first and foremost! It will give you anxiety watching it. Basically, you have you typical zombie outbreak and you follow Brad Pitt and his family. Brad Pitt is some kind of ex-special forces guy, so he knows his shit. Shit goes down while he and his family are stuck in traffic. Yeah that's what you begin with. From there on out, it's a hectic, stressful, crazy roller coaster of terror. Brad Pitt does get his family to safety, only to be told that he must go back out in the shit to try and figure out how to cure humanity of this disease and basically save the world. I guess a lot of people were disappointed in this movie because they'd read the book first and liked it better... I've never read the book, so that may be why I liked it so much. I guess my suggestion would be to do the same if you can? Otherwise, you'll probably just be happiest with The Walking Dead.
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas
  • Ghostbusters
  • The Man in the Iron Mask
  • Super Troopers
    • ✭✭✭ - I watched this movie on my boyfriend's suggestion. Basically, don't expect the most well-thought-out comedy you've ever seen, expect campy. If you're expecting campy, then you'll be happy. The story centers around some State Troopers who are mischevious and basically sitting on the fringes of legality. They discover that because they aren't making quota, their station will be shut down and taken over by the City Police. Oh no! They must rush to find a way to prove themselves to the Governor (Senator?) so that they don't get shut down. There are a lot of funny one-liners, and scenes of utter retardation that kept me interested, so I would say it's a worthwile watch.

  • Paranormal Activity 4
    • ✭✭½ - So basically, this was the same as the last 4 movies, just a different family. The main reason I keep watching these movies is because I like the overlying storyline that follows Katie and her sister. I want to know what the fuck is up with these witches?? Anyways, the story centers around 15-year-old Alex and her family, which includes her little brother Wyatt. Alex spends a lot of time with her best friend Ben, who spends most of the movie trying to get in her pants (well he is 15?). Shit goes down when Alex's family have to watch the creepy next door neighbor boy Robbie..... who has a suspicious imaginary friend named Toby........ (ruh roh). If you've seen any of the other movies then you know what happens next, with one small twist, that I'll save for YOU to discover when YOU watch! (Or to read on Wikipedia.)
