• I eat everything that nature voluntarily gives: fruits, vegetables, and the products of plants. But I ask you to spare me what animals are forced to surrender: meat, milk, eggs, and cheese.
• If it walked, hopped, swam, crawled, slithered, had eyes, a momma and a dad, don't eat it. — Forks Over Knives
• We've all been told that humans are carnivores, we're omnivore's, we're meat-eaters and we're supposed to be doing this. Are you aware that physiologically the human body is actually 100% herbivorous? We're plant-eaters. The length of our intestines are somewhere between 7 to 13 times the length of our torso. That's the same length of all herbivorous animal intestines on this planet. They're very long. But the length of the intestines on REAL meat-eaters (hyenas, coyotes, bears, tigers, and lions) only 3 to 6 times the length of their torso. They have a short intestinal tract so they can push through quickly decaying and rotting animal flesh, animal protein, cholesterol, saturated fat, trans fatty acids....which is why it is impossible for any genuine meat-eater to ever clog their arteries. Never happens to a real meat-eater. What's the number one killer of humans who choose to eat meat, cheese, milk and eggs? Heart disease from clogged arteries. — Gary Y.
• I spent 6 weeks at Thorn Apple Valley pig slaughterhouse in Detroit in 1993, I broke into animal research laboratories, I broke into fur farms, I went behind the scenes of every circus and every rodeo that ever came to Michigan. Worst scream I have ever heard? A mother cow on a dairy farm as she screams and bellows her lungs out day after day for her stolen baby to be given back to her. And why do they take babies away from their mom? Well, in the dairy industry you can't have little babies sucking up all that milk that was meant for them when they'd rather sell it to you instead. Every time you have a glass of cow milk some calf is not. — Gary Y.
• Around 20 percent of meat-eaters now have Type 2 diabetes even though this disease could be treated or cured with exercise and veganism. Animal protein is also one of the main causes of osteoporosis and the main reason why 1 in 3 meat-eaters get cancer. Animal protein is too acidic for the herbivorous human body. Cancer can only live and thrive in an acidic environment. The only foods that make human blood acidic are meat, cheese, milk and eggs. Plant protein is not acidic. — Gary Y.
• When you consume dairy products, you are ingesting the same antibiotics, pesticides, steroids and hormones you would if you ate meat directly.
• I've heard people say that they would be vegan or they only do it sometimes, but they don't do it all the time because they don't want to make anybody uncomfortable - which sounds really noble on the surface. How noble of you to not want to make anyone else uncomfortable so that you don't reflect your own values, so that you don't upset anybody else. I don't get this...because this is it, this is who we are, this is who I am. Anybody who knows me knows where I stand on certain issues, namely that animals are here for their own value, not here for my pleasure. That's not something I have to apologize for. That's not something that changes according to who invites me to dinner or who it might make uncomfortable. — Colleen P.G.
• A cloaca is the hole a bird urinates, excretes, and lay eggs out of. A human's mouth is not a tampon for a chicken's cloaca during her period.
• Most cows used for dairy production are kept indoors, with some having access to outdoor concrete or dirt paddocks. They are often forced to stand on hard surfaces—something their hooves are not designed for. This contributes to lameness, a condition where cows’ feet become inflamed, making it painful to walk.
• The tooth fairy is not real, Santa Claus is not real, and your meat doesn't just show up in a grocery store all nicely packaged. Your meat was a once living, sentient being who desired to live a life filled with relationships, joy and freedom. Stop believing in fairy tales and go vegan. — Gary S.
• Our bodies are designed to eat a plant-based diet. We're not made to be carnivores; if we were, we'd eat our meat raw like animals do without seasonings.
• Anyone who makes a change in their diet (even a positive change) will experience the symptoms of that change. Most people, however, have a few rough days, typically at the beginning. Some individuals experience detox symptoms aches, headaches, fatigue, irritability, your typical flu-like experience. Others may have no physical pains, but they have mental and emotional challenges. Some people feel crappy for weeks as their body fights through withdrawal caused after years of food addictions.
• Food is energy. A transfer of energy. Why eat fear, anxiety, stress, etc? That energy from factory animals goes to you.
• Another excuse that people tend to make around not eating animals is they often will say that they tried being vegetarian but they really craved meat. We are not obligate carnivores. If you want to see what an obligate carnivore is like when they see prey, look at a domestic cat when they see a squirrel or a bird. They get really focused and their eyes dilate and they start to drool and their tail starts to flicker. Is that what you get when you see a bird in your backyard? — Colleen P.G.
• "Vegan" and "healthy" are not synonymous. Oreos produced in America are vegan, but eat a pack a day and see if your health doesn't decline.
• As soon as I realized that I didn't need meat to survive or to be in good health, I began to see how forlorn it all is. If only we had a different mentality about the drama of the cowboy and the range and all the rest of it. It's a very romantic notion, an entrenched part of American culture, but I've seen, for example, pigs waiting to be slaughtered, and their hysteria and panic was something I shall never forget. — Cloris L.
• Cows’ natural life expectancy is 20 years or more, but the average dairy cow lives just 3 to 4 years, exhausted by constant lactation and frequent disease.
• Vegetarians (not vegans) are more susceptible to heart attacks, diabetes and other life ending diseases caused by their cholesterol due to eating dairy and eggs.
• I just could not stand the idea of eating meat - I really do think that it has made me calmer. People's general awareness is getting much better, even down to buying a pint of milk: the fact that the calves are actually killed so that the milk doesn't go to them but to us cannot really be right, and if you have seen a cow in a state of extreme distress because it cannot understand why its calf isn't by, it can make you think a lot. — Kate B.
• The THOU SHALT NOT KILL commandment should make everyone vegan anyway. Since each vegan spares the lives thousands of animals every year, honoring this commandment can only bring one closer to God. — Gary Y.
• PAYBACK IS HELL. Watch a cow attack the farmer who's trying to steal calf. http://t.co/b0y5FdoxAC
• If you are a follower of Judaism, Christianity or Islam, look no further than the Garden of Eden. It was a vegan haven, and Adam and Eve were the first vegetarians on this planet. Genesis 1:29, God's first dietary law, states, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food." Isaiah 11:7, God's last dietary law, states, "The wolf will live with the lamb, the cow will feed with the bear, the lion will eat straw like the ox, and a little child will lead them. And neither will harm nor destroy on My Holy Mountain." The beginning and the end are vegan because veganism causes no bloodshed and cruelty. Many other scriptures like Hosea 2:18 and Ecclesiastes 3:19 also profess God's love for animals. — Gary Y.
• I think animals need all the help they can get, because they have none. They have no rights. They have no protection. And so I think animals need help. And I think animals look to humans for protection, and of course humans lead them into slaughterhouses, which to me is just like an image of leading children into a slaughterhouse. There’s no difference. That level of trust and… But it’s a very cruel world.
• If you don't have anything else, just remember that having good health is the best blessing.
• Cows are milked by machine, metal clamps are attached to the cows' sensitive udders. The udders become sore and infected. But the machines keep on milking, sucking the dead white blood cells into the milk.
• A man of my spiritual intensity does not eat corpses. — George Bernard Shaw
• Fish have complex nervous systems and react to painful stimuli the way all animals do—their breathing rate increases, their muscles contract, and they try to escape.
Veganism is not about giving anything up or losing anything; it is about gaining the peace within yourself that comes from embracing nonviolence and refusing to participate in the exploitation of the vulnerable. Veganism is not a sacrifice. It is a joy. — Gary L.F.
• When it comes to cruelty, I think there's more cruelty in a piece of cheese, a glass of milk, and yogurt than there is in meat. — Gary Y.
• It appears that milk, meat, eggs are acidic to the body and the body must work hard to push them through BUT same goes for flour, sugar, rice, and a whole host of non-animal products.
• I don't believe there is any difference between a cow and a dog. They all suffer the same. All want to be free from pain and experience love, life, and freedom. — MPA
• Where does everyone think diseases come from? Broccoli? Asparagus? Blueberries? Strawberries? And I'm well aware that many other factors can lead to a disease. Stress is an absolute killer. So is lack of exercise, lack of sleep, and excessive amounts of empty, refined carbohydrates like white rice, white bread, and sugar. But animal products because of animal protein remain the main cause of every major disease. — Gary Yourofsky
• Being vegan is a selfless act. Like most selfless acts, you are rewarded immensely - better health, lighter conscience, terrific food choices, community of kind and compassionate people, a deep connection with animals and the environment and real meaning. Go vegan today. — Gary S.
• The meat industry spends hundreds of millions of dollars lying to the public about their product. But no amount of false propaganda can sanitize meat. The facts are absolutely clear: Eating meat is bad for human health, catastrophic for the environment, and a living nightmare for animals. — Chrissie H.
• I love the way meat tastes. Love it. Cheese, love it. Cows milk and eggs, love it. Guilty as charged. I did not stop eating this stuff because of a taste issue. I stopped for ethics, morality, decency, compassion to the animals that I share this planet with. — Gary Y.
• (About dairy cows who haven't had their first calf yet, then keep them pregnant for 3-4 years straight.) Why are they eating grass now? Well this is the last time in their lifetime they're gonna see grass. After that they're in the barn, they're standing there for the rest of their life. — Forks Over Knives
• Besides being inherently unhealthy and disease-promoting, dairy comes packed with pesticides, antibiotics, hormones (even organic), steroids, heavy metals, and other toxins fed to the cows to improve milk production.
• I have over 50 medical studies that show veganism is by far the healthiest way to live. — Gary Y.
• Recognize meat for what it really is: the antibiotic and pesticide-laden corpse of a tortured animal. — Ingrid N.
• Animals are the most innocent beings on this planet and need the most protection. When we exclude animals from God's circle of compassion, we exclude God from our lives. God demands mercy, compassion and meekness. After all, the meek shall inherit the earth, and the meek are the animals and those who walk humbly with them. — Gary Y.
• In America, almost everybody thinks you need to have meat for protein. Protein, protein, protein! And what’s in dairy? Calcium, calcium, calcium. It’s those kinds of proteins that latch onto the insides of your blood-stream and make it easier for you to have a heart attack. Look, cows produce milk with nutrients for cows. Maybe that’s why Americans end up looking like cows! Ultimately, no one wants cow tit pus in their food, do they? — Ariana Grande
• A glass of milk, a cup of yogurt, a slice of cheese, all require enormous amounts of violence, exploitation, mutilation, enslavement, theft and murder. None of these products come from happy, willing cows. All of these products can be made from almonds, soy beans, coconuts, cashews and other plants. It’s really a simple choice of compassion, justice and empathy. — Gary S.
• After reading “Eat to Live” by Dr. Fuhrman, as well as “The China Study” by Dr. Campbell, I find stories such as this one very compelling and interesting. Dr. Campbell particularly studied the effects of diet on cancer development and claims that he was able to turn the growth of cancer cells on and off in mice by feeding them either soy protein, or milk protein. He eventually concluded that it is animal protein that makes cancer cells grow and thrive.
• Animal protein is way too acidic for the human body. We don't process it properly. It is the main reason why 1 in 3 meat-eaters continually get cancer. — Gary Y.
• All dairy production, including Organic, is predicated on ripping apart mother and child. Dairy consumers contribute to this practice with their purchase.
• Veganism is about reducing and eliminating the pain and suffering that animals endure. Frankly, I could care less what vegans eat whether it's fruits and vegetables, Ruffles and Oreos, or Silk and Gardein. — Gary Y.
• When people say "I would like to try being vegan, but I like cheese too much" All I hear is “I would like to stop torturing animals, but I am way too selfish for that.”
• Mother cows make milk for THEIR babies and for THEIR babies alone. That case is closed forever. No debate. No discussion. They don't make milk for baby humans, adolescents humans or adult humans. The human body has absolutely no need for cow milk, just as it has absolutely no need for dog milk, giraffe milk, zebra milk, camel milk, goat milk or rhinoceros milk. This is why dairy is responsible for most allergies, asthma, Crohn's disease, childhood ear infections, acne, and breast, ovarian, colon, prostate and pancreatic cancers. — Gary Y
• You put a baby in a crib with an apple and a rabbit. If it eats the rabbit and plays with the apple, I’ll buy you a new car. — Harvey D.
• ‘Humane’ protocol calls for the animals to be ‘stunned’ before they are slaughtered. For cows, this means getting a metal bolt shot into the skull and then retracted. When done properly, using working equipment, this renders the cow unconscious. But time is money, and slaughterhouses operate at lightning speeds, some killing one animal every three seconds. Because thousands of frightened, struggling cows are not easy to stun, it is extremely common for a ‘stunner’ to miss his mark. Panicked hogs, also difficult to ‘hit’ are stunned with an electric device. And if the jolt is too high, it bruises and bloodies the hogs’ flesh (bad for business). Because business comes first on factory farms, the jolt is lowered, despite the fact that it doesn’t properly stun the hogs. Stunned or not, cows and hogs are then ‘strung up’ from the ceiling by a chain attached to their leg(s). In theory, while they dangle there, they are supposed to be unconscious. But often they are fully conscious, struggling, screaming, and fearfully staring at the workers while they have their throats stabbed open. Next, they travel along a ‘bleed rail’, where they should bleed to death. But again, these large, frightened, struggling, conscious animals are difficult targets and the ‘stickers’ (workers who cut their throats) don’t always get a ‘good cut’. Before cows can bleed to death, they are sent on their way to the ‘head-skinners’, where the skin is sliced from their heads while they are still conscious. Of course, this is excruciatingly painful, and the cows kick and struggle frantically. To avoid getting injured by the struggling animal, workers will sometimes sever the spinal cord with a knife blow to the back of the head. This paralyzes the animal below the neck so that the worker is safe. But these cows can still feel their skin being sliced away from their faces. Next, their bodies, and then, finally, they are split in half. Often before hogs can bleed to death, they are dunked fully conscious into 140-degree scalding water to remove the hair from their bodies. — Rory F. and Kim B.
• I feel that spiritual progress does demand at some stage that we should cease to kill our fellow creatures for the satisfaction of our bodily wants. — Mahatma Ghandi
• You are most likely wrinkling your nose in disgust at the thought of soy meat. I did the same around 10 years ago. Isn't it illogical, though, to believe soy meat is gross when it's made of soy, vegetables, grains and spices? Yet meat, the dismembered corpse of an animal, comprised of blood, flesh, veins, muscles and tendons, is considered delectable by millions of meat-eaters. Why isn't a beverage
that oozes out of a cow's udder considered disgusting? How about an egg from a hen? An unfertilized egg from a female is a period or part of a period. People scramble up hen periods in the morning and then they think vegans are weird because we don't make omelets anymore! — Gary Y.• A pregnant cow carries her baby for 9-10 months. Her newborn will quickly be stolen from her, either immediately or within 24 hours. Her precious milk cannot be wasted on a calf that is destined for the veal farm. Two months later, she will be artificially impregnated so the cycle can begin again. Every day, millions of mothers grieve so that humans can order extra cheese on their pizza.
• I'm vegan because it's the right thing to do. I have no illusions that I am special and that nonhuman animals must suffer and die for my convenience, taste or pleasure. How could I be anything but vegan? Why aren't you? — Gary S.
• Many years ago I found out something about hamburgers that really grossed me out. You may not know this, so I hope I don’t make you sick, but it turns out hamburgers are actually made out of dead cows. I am not making this up. Needless to say, as soon as I discovered that, I gave up meat entirely. — Al Yankovic
• If you're eating a salad with meat and cheese on it, it's not a salad. It's a sandwich without the bread, all chopped up in little pieces put inside of a bowl. — Gary Y.
• Saying you're against animal cruelty but continue to consume meat and dairy is literally paying for the torture and murder of animals.
When you go vegan you eliminate cholesterol entirely from your diet. You can only get cholesterol from meat, cheese, milk, and eggs. Your body makes cholesterol on its own. That's the only such thing as good cholesterol. If you bring it in from an outside source it's automatically bad cholesterol. — Gary Y
• Cancer develops over decades, and there is evidence that it’s what you ate 20 or 30 and 40 years ago that matters the most, not what you are eating now.
• There is no such thing as a meat, dairy, egg-eating environmentalist. - Gary Y.
• The science shows that the more meat we eat, the sicker we get -- heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and every other major degenerative disease. It's hard to argue that meat-eating is natural, given the negative effect it has on our health.
The reasons humans eat animals fall under taste, convenience and preference. All three of which are selfish, all three cause great suffering to animals, great suffering to the environment and great suffering to yourself. — Gary Smith
• If you’re eating or drinking something made from cow’s milk, it’s because a calf chained in a box somewhere isn’t. — Dan P.
• I know, in my soul, that to eat a creature who is raised to be eaten, and who never has a chance to be a real being, is unhealthy. It’s like… you’re eating misery. You’re eating a bitter life. — Alice Walker
• Humans possess zero carnivorous instincts, zero omnivorous instincts when we're born, young and growing up. We're all born vegan we just acquire a taste for meat, cheese, milk, and eggs after they're forced down our throats during childhood. — Gary Y.
• God endowed pigs, cattle, sheep, and all farmed animals with their own desires and needs, which is apparent when these animals are given an opportunity to enjoy life. For example, pigs are curious, social, and more intelligent than cats or dogs. Pigs can even play some video games better than monkeys. Similarly, chickens enjoy one another's company and like to play, dust bathe, and forage for food. Jesus compared his love for us to a hen's love for her chicks (Luke 13:34).
• Whilst good health is upon you anything else in life is manageable. — VeganUp
