Ever feel incomplete by the ending of a book, TV show, or movie? Then fanfiction may be your answer. Fan created stories for your reading pleasure. So here is a list for those of you fan fiction virgins to take your first step in the new world.
Note: Fanfiction is highly addictive and I don't recommend it unless you have a lot of spare time
- Canon
- A fanfiction that stays true to the plot of the actual book, TV show, or movie
- AU - Alternative Universe
- Want your favorite characters to have a different setting or a different ending. Keep an eye out for this type of fanfiction that is abbreviated by "AU"
- Cross-Over
- These are fanfictions that combine two different stories either setting, plot, or character-wise. Want to combine Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z? Go ahead! It's the internet, no one can judge you.
- OOC - Out of Character
- These are when the characters are written out of their normal personalities. Usually done for terrible comedic effect. I suggest to avoid these
- See crack fiction for further details
- Crack Fiction
- These are fictions that are written completely out of character and take part in events that most likely will never happen. These are lovely to read in the middle of the night, slightly drunk.
- Slash
- Boy Love, especially extremely unexpected pairings. Mostly for crazy fan girls.
- Femmeslash
- Girl love, except for the few boys that read fanfiction or lesbian.
- Lemon
- A fanfiction that has extremely...mature themes. Pretty much it's like an amateur-ly written love scene.
- Fluff
- Especially cute moments that make you feel warm and bubbly inside. Too much fluff can cause implosions.
- Smut
- A fiction that offers mature themes but not necessarily a lemon. More for the tame fan girls that need a quick-fixing
- One Shot
- A story written in one chapter. Really good ones are hard to come by, but some can be very surprising
- OC - Other Character
- Usually a new character brought into the story to act as the love interest of another character. These stories are usually terrible
- Do not confuse with OOC
- Mary Sues
- Another term to denote another character
- Refer to OC
- Flames
- Negative reviews to a story - usually authors offer "digital cookies" to stop readers from "flaming" them
- R&R - Read and Review
- Beta Reader - Beta
- The editor of a particular fanfiction, these people are desperately needed
- Disclaimer
- Used for legal issues which are honestly quite unnecessary
- Most disclaimers can be very humorous
You are ready to venture into the world of fanfiction, don't feel too embarrassed..just don't tell anyone about it XD
