Step 1: De-clutter
- Purge all clothing. Aim to sell + donate 30 items.
- Purge electricals. Check-in odd draws, see what works, what you want, and what spare cables you have. Donate + sell.
- Purge books. Donate the read and unwanted.
- Purge your desks, drawers, and shelves. Get rid of old pens, donate unused notepads, and gift unwanted treasures.
- Purge furniture. Unused bedside tables, shelves, old mirrors, pillows, Donate, sell, gift, or repurpose.
Step 2: Personals
- If you haven't already, set up a recycle bin and find out exactly what you can and can't recycle in your area.
- Buy less clothing and make sure it's very rarely fast fashion. Make sure it's second hand or from local sustainable brands.
- Use reusable bags. Including smaller ones for loose veg & fruit.
- Always carry a reusable water bottle.
- Buy second-hand electricals.
- Lower makeup consumption and buy plastic-free when fully used.
- Try only to buy second-hand furniture. Decorate the walls with loved paintings.
- Invest in an electrical or hybrid car down the line.
Step 3: Kitchen
- Buy only plastic-free loose fruit, veg, fish, meats, and cheeses. (Easy at deli counters or framers markets)
- Buy bulk loose other essential foods from zero-waste shops, or bulk bins.
- Generally, buy less meat and consume less dairy. The meat industry is the leading cause of climate change. Deforestation, water pollution, emissions, animal suffering, overfishing, creation of superbugs/viruses,
- Buy a new reusable straw. Make sure to use any old plastic straws you have around first.
- Buy a reusable coffee cup. Bonus if it's made from recycled materials.
- Use beeswax wraps and reusable baking tray liners instead of clingfilm and foil. Bonus if homemade beeswax wraps.
- Buy reusable plastic-free scrubbers when your current ones break.
- Look into making your own cleaning products.
- Make your own laundry detergent with chestnuts or buy soapnuts.
- Buy or make your own wool dryer balls.
- Replace tea bags with loose tea and a metal strainer.

Step 4: Bathroom
- Use a bar of soap wrapped in paper/card. OR refill an old bottle from a refill station in-store or in a bulk store.
- Buy a plastic-free bar of shampoo OR refill an old bottle.
- Instead of pads or tampons, buy a menstrual cup or reusable pads.
- When your current toothbrush brakes, buy a bamboo toothbrush. Also, try zero-waste toothpaste.
- Most sunscreens are proven to destroy coral reefs, try to buy a plastic-free coral safe option, or make your own.
- Buy a reusable razor.
- Buy a plastic-free deodorant or make your own.
- Replace your comb when it breaks with a wooden one.
- Other: Compostoble cotton swabs, compostable floss, loofa, stainless steel tongue scraper, homemade mouthwash.
Step 5: Reuse
- Make your own makeup removers/cotton rounds from old pillows or t-shirts.
- Make your own reusable bags from old pillows or t-shirts.#
- Reuse takeout Tupperware for lunches. Pair with your own cutlery.
- Keep gift wrap to reuse, or use newspaper.
- Reuse jars from sauces, dips, oils, candles, etc.
Step 6: Cultivate
- Grow your own: Herbs, spices, Vegetables, Fruit.
- Go foraging! Try picking: Berries, mushrooms, garlic, and greens like dandelion leaves.
- Grow air-purifying plants.
- Bake your own bread. Bonus for making your own starter for sourdough.
- Start a compost bin. Use natural food scraps, soil, leaves.
- Try a worm bin.
- Make your own lip scrub and balm.
- Make your own teas. Forage for pine, rosebuds, and other ingredients.
- Crochet & knit: Hat, scarf, blanket, cotton rounds, flannels, scrubbers, placemats, coasters, bag, cardigan,
- Make your own natural dyes: Beet, grapes, onion, pomegranate, coffee, spinach, etc.
- Make your own hair oils/masks.
- Drive less, cycle and walk more.
- Try quit smoking.
