- Ancient times - The Inhuman Hive is created by the Kree, and banished to another world by his fellow Inhumans.
- Around 4th century BC - A singular cult split into two factions: Order of the Shield, and Brotherhood of the Spear. Order of the Shield seeks to keep Hive imprisoned. Brotherhood of the Spear seeks to return Hive to earth.
- 800 to 1700s - The Brotherhood of the Spear evolves over time, changing names but keeping the same purpose. They find the object called the Monolith, and try to use it to retrieve Hive from his exile by sending "sacrifices" through the portal the Monolith creates. No one ever returns from these missions.
- 1700s to 1800s - For an unknown reason, the missions are abandoned in the mid to late 1800s. The Monolith is split into pieces, and given to the organization's top leaders.
- 1800s to 1900s - Johann Schmidt, already a member of the older organization, infiltrates the Nazi regime to access their funds and resources. Once he obtains what he's after, the Tesseract, he splits away from them and reforms the organization under the name “Hydra”. Upon his disappearance, Hydra splits into multiple, modern factions.
- Present - Newer factions of Hydra obtain artefacts to use to develop super weapons and new technology, shirking the traditional faction's beliefs and focusing on world domination. Alexander Pierce, one leader of a newer faction, helps in infiltrating Shield but is eventually killed; many of the newer leaders die soon after. In the end, the traditional factions survive to continue their work. Although Hive is rescued from his exile, he is eventually destroyed by Shield, and most Hydra factions are taken down after. At least one survives, forming an alliance with the alien Confederacy in an effort to protect Earth from an unspecified threat.
