Michael Ausiello does one of these every year, and I like to pick shows/actors that would never get recognized by the Emmys for being extremely awesome. The Emmys are allowing 6 nominations per category this year, and because they are so well-regarded, I have to include The Office, 30 Rock, and How I Met Your Mother despite the fact that I don't watch them except for some clips/knowledge gleaned from hearing/reading about them. I know that I will be bitterly disappointed when the nominations are announced July 16th, but anyway, here are some of my suggestions based on my albeit limited knowledge of the TV landscape.
Best Comedy and Drama Series
Best Drama
- Friday Night Lights (DirecTV/NBC): In its 3rd season, it was just so amazing. There were only 13 episodes, but every episode presented me with more evidence of how much I loved the show, the acting, and the characters whose lives were being presented to me.
- Mad Men (AMC): The show defines what is good television; it's well-written, looks beautiful, and always challenges the viewer with its thought-provoking look at the 1960s world.
- Supernatural (The CW): It would never actually get nominated, but this season(the show's 4th) was amazing. The show's mythology became really interesting through the examination of angels like Castiel and the coming of the Apocalypse.
- Grey's Anatomy (ABC): While I found the whole Denny scenario irritating, once Izzie was diagnosed, the show came back, and I loved the episodes toward the end of the season. Bailey especially makes me love this show.
- The Closer (TNT): Even though it's a procedural, I love how Kyra Sedgwick brings her character to the screen and displays all of Brenda's emotional shortcomings in a way that is relatable and interesting. Also the episode where virgins were being targeted in a game of "cherry picking" really made me feel emotionally attached to the girls being persecuted.
- Lost (ABC): I don't watch this show, but I know from friends that it can be amazing and thus likely deserves a nomination.
Best Comedy
- Pushing Daisies (ABC): I loved this show so much and was so disappointed when it got canceled earlier this season. Olive singing "Eternal Flame" was one of my favorite moments of the TV season, and Chuck/Ned are adorable. The ending to the series finale was touching as well.
- Desperate Housewives (ABC): This show isn't really one of my favorites, but execution wise, I found the flash forward very effective. The Dave mystery was way too drawn out, but I loved how Gaby got out of her frumpy slump and appreciated the Edie-centric episode.
- Ugly Betty (ABC): I love Marc and Amanda, Molly majorly reformed Daniel, and Betty is just so endearing.
- _How I Met Your Mother_(CBS): It seems highly amusing from what I've read, and I trust other people's recommendations.
- The Office (NBC): I love Jim, therefore this show is awesome. That's all I have to say.
- 30 Rock (NBC): Tina Fey is amazing.
Best Supporting Actor and Actress
Best Supporting Actress (Drama)
- Connie Britton (_Friday Night Lights_): Everything about her work as Tami Taylor is impressive and realistic. To me she is the best actress working in TV right now.
- Christina Hendricks (_Mad Men_): She is my favorite character on the show; she's strong yet vulnerable, and that scene where her fiance basically rapes her in the office was her best work of the season. The pain and conflict within her was apparent on her face but veiled to keep her fiance from knowing the extent of her suffering.
- Chandra Wilson (_Grey's Anatomy_): I love Bailey; I loved all of Chandra Wilson's work in the 2-part finale where she was facing the pain of leaving her husband, and I loved the episodes where she was interacting with children as she considered switching her specialty. She is what I love the most about watching this show.
- Sandra Oh (_Grey's Anatomy_): Cristina's arc this season was awesome, especially as she was dealing with Hunt's PTSD and her love for him despite his emotional issues.
- Katherine Heigl (_Grey's Anatomy_): Izzie can be really annoying, but Katherine Heigl imbued everything with intensity and made me appreciate the cancer arc even as Denny tested my patience.
- Adrianne Palicki (_Friday Night Lights_): I love how everything with Tyra is portrayed; she has such a sucky life, but she is so strong, and she managed to get into college with Landry's help.
Best Supporting Actor (Drama)
- Justin Chambers (_Grey's Anatomy_): His arc with Izzie's cancer really showed Justin Chambers' range, and more is being revealed about Alex which makes his depth as a character much improved.
- Kevin McKidd (_Grey's Anatomy_): As with Sandra Oh, his difficulties following his time in Iraq made his work interesting and made it stand out despite the fact that he's only been on the show one year.
- Zach Gilford (_Friday Night Lights_): Matt Saracen is my favorite male character on television. How the interactions with his mom, Julie, Coach Taylor, and his grandma were portrayed by Gilford were heartbreakingly realistic.
- Jesse Plemons (_Friday Night Lights_): Landry is another character that I just love wholeheartedly, and everything about him reads true to a high school student dealing with his love for a super popular girl.
- Taylor Kitsch (_Friday Night Lights_): Tim Riggins has more layers than it would seem at first glance. That moment when he says goodbye to Jason Street was so touching, but he always provided a humorous side to the show as well(like when he was talking to his brother about needing "me time" at college).
- Misha Collins (_Supernatural_): The character of Castiel instantly intrigued me because of all the interesting facets of angels on this show. The story of how Jimmy came to be inhabited by Castiel also provided one of the best episodes of the end of the season.
Best Supporting Actress (Comedy)
- Kristin Chenoweth (_Pushing Daisies_): She's perfect in the role of Olive Snook; she is so cute but not in an annoying way, and I love watching her deal with her feelings for Ned.
- Swoosie Kurtz (_Pushing Daisies_): As Aunt Lily, she is hilarious, and the revelation of her being Chuck's real mother really gave the actress an interesting arc.
- Becki Newton (_Ugly Betty_): Amanda is the funniest character on the show, and I always love episodes more if she has more screen time.
- Vanessa Williams (_Ugly Betty_): Wilhelmina is a really fascinating character, and Vanessa Williams delivers her lines with a fervor that makes even simple dialogue sound biting.
- Nicolette Sheridan (_Desperate Housewives_): I was impressed by Edie's part in the story with Dave and loved Edie's episode for the aftermath of her death; it revealed sides to Edie that I'd never seen before.
- Alyson Hannigan (_How I Met Your Mother_): I love her, and she has always been funny to me. Unfortunately, I don't watch this show, but I trust others' recommendations.
Best Supporting Actor (Comedy) I don't watch many comedies with actors that I like so this category is a little harder for me to do.
- Chi McBride (_Pushing Daisies_): He's hilarious with the delivery of his dialogue, and I've loved him since he used to be on Boston Public when I was in middle school.
- Michael Urie (_Ugly Betty_): Marc is the other character besides Amanda by whom I am constantly amazed because of the comedic flair brought to the character seemingly without effort.
- Neil Patrick Harris (_How I Met Your Mother_): I know from reading various blogs that Barney is really funny and one of the best characters on the show.
- Tracy Morgan (_30 Rock_): He may seem dumb, but the best actors play dumb to great comedic effect.
- Doug Savant (_Desperate Housewives_): Tom has always been really interesting to me, and his storyline with feeling unfulfilled reminded me of my mother.
- John Krasinski (_The Office_): Again, I absolutely love Jim!
Best Lead Actor and Actress
Best Lead Actress (Drama)
- January Jones (_Mad Men_): She plays Betty with this restraint that's beautiful to watch because the beauty and vulnerability to the character is so interesting.
- Elisabeth Moss (_Mad Men_): All season led up to that moment of genius when she told Pete about their child.
- Emily Deschanel (_Bones_): Temperance Brennan is truly fascinating to me, and this season saw her deal with her feelings for Booth even more. Her moments in the hospital with him were deeply touching.
- Ellen Pompeo (_Grey's Anatomy_): Usually I'm the first person to complain about how Meredith is being annoying, but this season, she really changed and became happy both in her relationship with Derek and in her career.
- Kyra Sedgwick (_The Closer_): While I often complain about her getting nominated over Connie Britton, since this year Connie Britton's in supporting actress, I think she deserves a nomination because her portrayal of Brenda has always been excellent.
- Leighton Meester (_Gossip Girl_): Blair's love for Chuck, the hurt she felt at being rejected from Yale, and in general all the pain that occurs for her makes Leighton Meester's rendering of the character great to watch.
Best Lead Actor (Drama)
- Jon Hamm (_Mad Men_): How amazingly well he plays Don Draper is deserving of recognition, especially because of the depth that he brings to the role.
- Kyle Chandler (_Friday Night Lights_): He is the heart of the series, and he is such a realistic father and coach; every emotion that he feels is perfectly portrayed.
- David Boreanaz (_Bones_): Except that random amnesia bit which I will conveniently ignore, his acting is wonderful as he struggles daily with his feelings for Brennan, and he also provides the show with a great deal of humor, as in the episode with the funeral.
- Jensen Ackles (_Supernatural_): He is so astonishing in his ability to be vulnerable, strong, yet funny, and all that was revealed as he dealt with the ramifications of the Apocalypse allowed him to display what an amazing actor he is.
- Jared Padalecki (_Supernatural_): While I am constantly more overwhelmed by what Dean has to endure, Jared's playing of Sam's addiction to power made him one of the darkest characters that I still understand.
- Hugh Laurie (_House_): I'm not a big fan of House, but he's a great actor, and the stories for him this year make him at least deserving of a nomination.
Best Lead Actress (Comedy)
- Tina Fey (_30 Rock_): Again, I love her, and she is a remarkable, funny actress.
- America Ferrera (_Ugly Betty_): She never falters even when I feel like the story is weak as it was at times in this past season.
- Anna Friel (_Pushing Daisies_): She's adorable, and her storyline with her reanimated father provided her with interesting material while she also dealt with her ongoing troubles with Ned.
- Eva Longoria-Parker (_Desperate Housewives_): She never seems to be appreciated, and to me, she is the funniest one of the housewives on the series.
- Teri Hatcher (_Desperate Housewives_): Susan usually annoys me to death, but I actually liked her this season, and when she cried at Jackson's proposal (even if it ultimately wasn't real), my heart broke for her.
- Joanne Garcia (_Privileged_): The show came highly recommended, and I assume it's because of her. Plus Michael Ausiello highly praised her performance often, and usually I agree to some degree with his assessments.
Best Lead Actor (Comedy) Once again, a difficult category, but I try to go based on what I know rather than only what I've seen.
- Lee Pace (_Pushing Daisies_): The heart of the show, and his sweetness always got to me, especially his love for Chuck which made him willing to do almost anything for her.
- Jim Parsons (_The Big Bang Theory_): I've seen very little of this show, but I loved him in the scene with Leonard Nimoy's napkin, and he makes me appreciate his dorkiness.
- Alec Baldwin (_30 Rock_): I believe that the show wouldn't be the same without him.
- Zachary Levi (_Chuck_): I've only ever seen one episode, but again, from what I've read he seems highly impressive and deserving.
- Steve Carell (_The Office_): He has always been funny to me, even on Jay Leno which I really dislike watching.
- James Roday (_Psych_): It seems like it would be extremely funny because of him: if only I'd ever seen an episode.
