Hair Care

  • All hair care product ingredients are free of: silicones, sulfates, parabens, phthalates, fragrance/parfum, mica, artificial colors/dyes, glycols, alcohols, paraffin oil/wax, mineral oil
  • Never use protein-based hair products daily and consistently to prevent protein overload. Alternate between beer, egg, honey shampoo bar and one without protein ingredients. Don't use rice water based products or ones with lots of hydrolyzed proteins daily.
  • To check, hold a strand of product free dry hair and tug. If it stretches and retains length, it's fine. If it keeps stretching, it needs protein. If it's brittle and breaks easily, it's in protein overload :(
  • For wavy curls, use a silk curling headband overnight. Place on top of hair and secure with a claw clip. Start with the front sections and wrap hair around the silk rod away from face. Add more hair as you move down the rod until all hair is wrapped. Remove claw clip, secure ends with scrunchies and leave overnight. To undo, remove scrunchies and lift rod up to remove to keep curl pattern.
  • Balance between proteins, emollients, and humectants. Dry hair means more emollient and humectant ingredients, less protein. Try PEH Balance Analyzer

Shower Routine

  • Gently detangle with wide tooth comb. Coat entire length of hair and scalp in DIY flaxseed gel mixture. Fasten hair up with a claw clip. Leave on for 30 minutes then wash normally. Alternatively, do the same with a pre-wash hair oil. Leave hair oil on for 2-3 hours then wash normally.
  • Use scalp brush while shampooing, near the nape of neck, hairline, and behind the ears. Use fingers to gently separate any knots with olive oil or goat milk soap until you can run through hair without snagging
  • Coat entire length of hair in liquid conditioner and leave on for 3 minutes
  • After rinsing all the conditioner, sink entire length of hair, starting from the ends, into container (not glass) of hair tea. Let sit for 30 seconds to a minute. Pour the rest over scalp and let sit for another 30 seconds. Rinse with cold water. Use strong, amber-colored rosemary tea. Alternate twice a month with the DIY blend.
  • After showering, gently detangle with a wet wide-tooth comb.
  • Apply generous amounts of plain hyaluronic acid serum on wet hair (avoid the scalp which doesn't have as much water)
  • Air-dry 25 minutes before next step
  • Apply either camellia, argan, macadamia nut, kukui nut, rosehip, seabuckthorn or emu oil on hair/scalp and a couple drops more near the end.
  • Massage a dropper full of scalp serum all over scalp
  • Air-dry completely

Hair Notes

  • Detangle every day with a wooden wide tooth comb. Always brush with a wooden or boar bristle hair brush before bed. Plastic combs (on dry hair) and nylon bristle brushes cause static
  • Mist scalp with DIY rosemary spray every other day
  • Mist hair often with rose water or floral hydrosols during the day when it's hot out
  • Deep conditioning or oil hair mask every two weeks
  • Use hooded dryer with hair mask for deep treatment
  • Two-step henna and indigo hair stain once a month
  • Sleep with braids
  • Silk pillowcases/night cap (wash every two weeks)
  • Never use elastic hair bands. Use silk/satin scrunchies instead

DIY Hair Stuff

  • DIY Strengthening/Softening/Shiny Hair Tea: Make a strong tea from a handful of a combination of these herbs: fenugreek seed, rosemary, nettles, horsetail, oatstraw, marshmallow root, hibiscus, and dried rose petals. Strain, cool, and pour into plastic container. Use the same day it's made.
  • DIY Rosemary Spray: 8+ twigs of rosemary and 2 cups of water. Boil for 5 minutes and simmer for 15 minutes. Let it cool and pour into amber-colored spray bottle. Spray directly onto roots and scalp, and massage it in. Remake weekly and refrigerate.
  • DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatment: Pour 1/4 cup of flax seed and fenugreek seed into 1 liter of distilled water. Simmer for 10 minutes. Strain into a container, and let it cool until it becomes viscous. Mix 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel. Add 2-3 drops of rosemary essential oil. Gently apply gel all over hair and scalp. Add-Ons are 1/2-1 teaspoon.
  • Hot Oil Treatment: Warm unrefined/cold pressed coconut oil, argan, macadamia, rosehip, or emu oil. Coat hands with oil and comb the oil down hair with fingers. If hair looks “wet”, you put too much. Fasten hair up with claw clip and wear plastic cap. Wear heat cap/hot towel or use hooded dryer. Leave for 3-4 hours. Use extra conditioner.
  • Coconut Milk Hair Mask: Combine 1 can of full-fat coconut milk, 2 tablespoons of hibiscus powder, 2 tablespoons of rose powder, and 2 tablespoons of spirulina powder. Mix thoroughly and use as hair mask. Leave on for 60 minutes.

  • Twice a week, exfoliate hands with body scrub. Massage a thin amount of 40% urea cream on hands and palms. Layer with body butter. Seal with liquid lanolin. Wear cotton gloves overnight.
